The King of Route 66 Deigns To Stop At PS2

Sega's extremely un-realistic U.S.A. truckin' sim (and an arcade game, too) is a-comin' back home to the PS2 next March.

Sega of America sent word late today that The King of Route 66, an eighteen-wheeler racing game that hit arcades worldwide earlier this year, is about to start headin' for the PlayStation 2. Yu Suzuki's AM2 studio over in Japan is working on the port themselves (they did the original arcade version); it's due to hit the U.S. in March 2003.

As a sandpaper-faced, coffee-snorting grizzly bear of a truck driver (you can choose from five or so), your basic mission in King is to make it from Illinois to California, driving away with the eight Queens of Route 66 in the process. Of course, the evil Tornado Corporation will try to fight you every step of the way?they must want the girls as much as you do?and you'll have to complete assorted objectives and master a set of amusing mini-games to have any chance of making the haul.

"I've never taken a caffeine-fueled, demolition derby-style road trip across the U.S. in an 18-wheeler to win the hearts of eight beautiful women, but if I had, I bet it would be just like The King of Route 66," said Sega vice president Mike Fischer in Sega's release, and we'd be very hard pressed to disagree with him. (We don't have the money to try it out ourselves, either.)

We should have more information on the PS2 King of Route 66 once the release date draws closer, so stay tuned. Until then, you can console yourself with a little truck drivin' music. Tell 'em GamePro sent you.
