Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter, the official name of Capcom's newest PS2 RPG, makes its online debut. Not only is it 3D, it's also totally underground. Really.
Capcom wasn't saying much about the new Breath of Fire game when we last wrote about it (in the September issue of the print mag), but they've finally loosened up a bit on us today. The new game, now officially titled Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter in Japan, is still pretty early but already has a lovely graphical sense which we'll try our best to communicate to you via the screens below. It's obvious that Capcom is really trying hard with this one. About the only thing Breath of Fire V shares with its predecessors is the fact that the main character is named Ryu?otherwise, they've pretty much thrown out the book and written a new one. The game takes place in a massive underground metropolis, and Ryu's a third-class officer in Ranger, the resident police force in this retro-scifi world. A Ranger's basic duties include fighting off anti-government organization Trinity and slaying rogue DCs (Designed Creatures), the biomechanical creatures that do all the dirty work needed to keep the metropolis running smoothly. Of course, this being an RPG, Ryu will probably run into quite a bit more trouble than that.
The screenshots below, showing off some of the game's DC monsters and cutscenes, should give you something of an idea of how far-out Capcom is taking the Breath of Fire genre this time around. They've actually moved up the release date from winter to fall in Japan, so we should be able to get some hands-on time with the Japanese release pretty soon.
