Sony & Insomniac Reveal Ratchet & Clank

So what have the people behind Spyro the Dragon been doing the last two years? Only reinventing the entire platform genre, it seems. You'll get to see it this winter.

Sony Computer Entertainment officially announced a release date for platform game Ratchet & Clank today. The latest game from Spyro the Dragon creators Insomniac Games will come out for the PlayStation 2 in winter 2002, just in time for the Christmas holiday.

"Ratchet and Clank clearly demonstrates that we are only just scratching the surface of the technological power of PlayStation 2," said SCE director Ami Blaire. "This time around, the limits are no longer with the technology but with the imagination and abilities of the development team. This holiday season will elevate the talented developers from the fray, with Insomniac leading the pack."

Ratchet & Clank teams up two unlikely heroes (are there any other kind?) in an adventure that spans across multiple planets. Ratchet, a backwater mechanic with dreams of hot-blooded space exploration, runs into Clank when the renegade robot crashes an escape ship on his planet. Clank, as it turns out, is looking for help in his quest to bring down Chairman Drek and his plans to build a new planet for himself by invading and destroying old ones. Together, the two will use over 35 weapons and items to lay waste to their enemies and find out what the evil Chairman is really up to.

In a PS2 marketplace suddenly filled with high-concept 3D platformers, Ratchet & Clank might have a valid claim to the action-game throne. At the very least, it's likely more than just another cookie-cutter "collect 100 magic fluffles to advance to the next level" adventure. We'll find out for sure at this month's E3 show, where Sony will display a playable version of the game.
