EA cutting back on new IP, increasing franchise frequency

After posting less-than-successful sales numbers for new IPs, EA will return to a more franchise-based release slate, including more sports games.

EA cutting back on new IP, increasing sports games

A new article posted on Develop (via Joystiq) seems to indicate that losses and layoffs from the last financial quarter will cause EA to revert to its old publishing mindset of sustaining its most profitable franchises, and eschewing non-licenced new titles (like Mirror's Edge and Brutal Legend). In the article, EA CEO John Riccitello is quoted as saying the kinds of series that will continue to thrive under EA's banner in the future "are selling or have sold in their most recent edition 2 million units or more."

This, of course, includes the many sports titles and movie licenced-games published by EA, some of which may have more than one annual release, as Riccitello stated "Electronic Arts has a core slate of games label and sports franchises that we will iterate on a either annual or bi-annual basis."

Outside of the NFL and Rock Band licenses, EA has rarely released more than one game per franchise or license per year. Is it possible we could see more EA franchise titles getting multiple yearly releases?

This means we get more sports games over actual video games that are fun. Why so many sports games, they are boring and a waste of money. If you want to play sports, go out and play them.

Oh, great. More roster updates going for $60 a pop. And I was just starting to think EA had turned a corner.

Sports games suck and are a waste of money. EA makes them every single year with very little changes and people are stupid enough to buy them every year. I don't see why they just make 1 game for each sport then add DLC. It would be cheaper then they could spend more time and money on good games.
