Capcom listened to consumer opinion on their new business strategy, and now they're bringing a new RE5 mission and PS3 motion support to the U.S. as DLC.
Capcom confirmed yesterday that the additional Resident Evil 5 content that was released in Japan as a separate game (Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition) will be made available to European and North American consumers as paid downloadable content.
The biggest piece of new content is a two-hour prequel mission featuring Jill Valentine.
The post on the Capcom Unity blog revealed the results of a user poll last month regarding how the new content should be made available, and unsurprisingly more than sixty percent voted for paid DLC instead of a new stand-alone product. This may be one of the first instances of a major games publisher allowing consumer input to shape their business strategy, and though the decision to release downloadable content in North America (where the adoption rate for broadband console connections is higher) may seem like an obvious choice, Capcom's Chris Kramer demurs:
I'll be honest: we had a strong feeling going in that most folks were going to be ticking the box for digital delivery. Seeing as how we were asking you ONLINE to tell us if you would like to nab new game content via the internet, we thought we may have been skewing the results a bit. What surprised us, however, was just how many of you ended up voting for a new physical package. We?re still trying to wrap our heads around this strongly stated position from a vocal range of the community, but we've definitely heard you guys loud and clear as well.
Consumers purchasing the new content can expect to receive a new prequel episode featuring series regulars Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield on a mission to infiltrate the private manse of Umbrella Corp. fonder Ozwell E. Spencer. Hardware support for the PS3 motion controller is also expected, as well as unannounced new content intended to keep players from trading in their RE5 discs.
You will not be asked to purchase a new copy of the game just to get at the new stuff, just make sure to hold on to your RE5 disc and you?ll be ready to roll in Spring 2010 when we make available new Resident Evil adventures (and some other things we haven?t told you about yet) for you. Keep that in mind when thinking about selling RE5 back or handing it off to a friend ;)

That thing looks too much like a dildo, the whole round shape. And the pink thing looks like a vibrator. It's just too odd. They should at least have made it look more like the Wiimote. Completely copy it. More like regular remote.

What about the added cost of putting a physical copy on shelves? Don't you worry a standalone product would have been more expensive than a DLC expansion?

When it was first shown at E3 I commented that it looked like a penis with one ball. Thats probably what they should name it: the one-eyed wiley.

That's just a prototype, sony said it's not going to look like that when it comes out. Hopefully in the final product they hide that damn pink ball.
