Iwata: Nintendo not 'losing its edge' to competitors

Even with the proliferation of the iPhone and the upcoming releases of motion-sensing technology from Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata told investors the company hasn't lost its edge.
Gamasutra has a report from a recent Nintendo investor briefing that the company's CEO, Satoru Iwata, has adamantly denied that rival companies and their competing technology have caused Nintendo to lose ground, stating "I cannot understand at all why some people come to think that Nintendo has lost its edge as soon as they hear such news that other companies are newly applying for motion sensing technology."
While Iwata did admit that the DS' has lost some of its early momentum, he still remained steadfast that the platform was still successful, stating "Nintendo DS has not lost its footing at all. Actually, it has been even increasing its footing all around the world."
Iwata reiterated that the DS could receive a Kindle-like upgrade in the future, but closed his comments with a salvo against subscription-based platforms like the Kindle and iPhone, stating "The business model which requires our customers to promise to pay several thousands yen every month for the next two years does not suit well for the entertainment commodities."

I don't think they are losing their edge, I just think that the Wii insanity has finally died down alittle bit compared to where it was the last three years. People will still buy Nintendo products, especially their first party stuff.
But next year when Project Natal and the Sony wand come out things will start to change. Project Natal is definitely going to make a huge impact on the industry as long as they price it affordably.

i am starting to hate nintendo more and more. i used to be a nintendo fanboy, but the wii was too disappointing to be a fan of. it COULD have been good, but all the kid games and stupid games and crappy graphics just suck ass. and nintendo IS losing their edge. if their sales are dying down, the12p, then that means they are losing their edge. whether its because everyone has a wii or because the wii is old news, its still losing sales.

I have a question unrelated to the article. What are those two big balls on each side of his face?

One is a mic and the other is his ear.
On the news, a Nintendo exec would pretty much say anything at this point. It is not like he is going to tell the truth or something all of a sudden.

i don't really care much for the wii. natal is rumored to cost as much as a system so thats going to be a epic fail.
nintendo needs to offer us ds users what we always wanted.
give us super nintendo game already!
a better camera with flash.

Really, though, Nintendo at this stage, your current platform prevents an entire library of popular titles from reaching your users. A new Wii is a year away at best. You may not have lost your edge, but in the mean time I see few reasons to pick up a Wii-mote. Without anything substantively new, I feel like I'm living in the past w/ all these archived games and remakes. The Wii definitely feels tired.

the one game i mentioned in another article that looks interesting for wii is new super smash bros wii. i keep seeing ads on the internet and it looks amazing. i love being a dick to friends, so i'll luv that game. just like i loved smacking my friends in LBP into spikes, fire, or electricity.

Yea. as much as i'm gonna regret saying this as a loyal nintendo fan it has to be said that compared to your competitors you've pretty much hit a wall. 3rd 3rd party developers are basically dumping shovelware on the wii (many of which have had ZERO advertisement what-so-ever) and only games made by nintendo themselves are bringing in money.
many gamers (including myself) own more games on the ps3 and 360 then they do on the wii. heck,Even the DS and psp have far more entertaining games then the wii.
Face it Mr.Iwata we gamers like hardcore games and well the wii has very few of them compared to the competition.
But that's just my personal opinion.

Pretendo is losing its edge, other than the Wii motion sensing titles and balance board stuff, where are the NEW titles. Other than a motion sensing Wii Zelda port, what have they given the core fans? Remember all the drama over gaming storage? friend codes? How Lil' Reggie was all about pleasing the core crowd and he jumps the shark with Animal Crossing. Nintendo was like a cool ass band, until it comes out that the lead singer OD'd.
