New Spore game lands on Facebook

The expansion of the Spore universe continues, with Electronic Arts taking the franchise up against the likes of Cafe World and Mafia Wars on Facebook.

Continuing its efforts to adapt to the changing face of the online game world and recast itself as a thoroughly modern games publisher with initiatives in the mobile, web, and social network gaming domains, Electronic Arts today announced its first major Facebook title. Spore Islands invites Facebook users to create a creature and compete against their online friends in a "survival of the fittest" game of exploration and domination.

New Spore game lands on Facebook

"In Spore Islands, players get to invite friends in their social web to play on their island, so creating this game exclusively for Facebook was a natural choice for us since they are the largest and most popular social platform for games," said Caryl Shaw, Senior Producer, Spore Islands in a release from the publisher today. "What sets Spore Islands apart from other social games is that it offers a different kind of social interactivity where a player's gameplay experience is directly affected by the choices and decisions their friends make. It's an ongoing game, so player's creatures and islands will be active at all times, whether the player is logged into Facebook or not."

The game is designed to encourage interaction between players, and the goal is to meet other people and send creatures to their islands and gather "DNA points" that allow for further creature customization. It's a simple concept, and in many ways it seem to share a lot with both the PC game and the Spore Creatures game that appeared on Nintendo DS.

"Games are one of the most popular activities on Facebook, with more than 100 million unique active users in the top 10 games alone," said Facebook Platform Manager Gareth Davis. "We are excited to see Spore Islands as one of the latest games on Facebook for our 300 million users to connect, share and play with friends."

Well, I'm officially a hypocrite. I always said that I'll never play a Facebook game (they seem to be ruining my friends' lives)...

Donkeykong, I have to agree with you..... I might actually try this despite seeing what it has done to people I know

Check it out and let us know what you think. It seems like a very simplified version of the Spore concept, but I'm intrigued to know if it's enough to get you hooked. Also - let me know if you're already a Spore player. I'm interested to see how a game like this can affect a franchise. Is it more attractive to people that already know and love the Spore universe? Or is it going to be more effective at attracting NEW players to Spore.
