Rockstar's infamous 2007 action-adventure hits the PC this Friday with all of its original violence and gore intact.
Since the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) was formed in 1994, the body has rated almost 18,000 games for consoles, handhelds, PCs and (bizarrely) DVD players. Of those 18,000 products just 23 have ever been given the ?Adults Only? AO-rating. Of these, many are hardly what you would classify as "games" - a large number, in fact, are borderline-pornographic "interactive" products with titles like Water Closet: The Forbidden Chamber, All Nude Nikki, Body Language, and Wet: The Sexy Empire. Others, such as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (interestingly the only console-based game with the rating) were only temporarily available with the AO-label because of associated controversy and media outrage.
Later this week though, a 24th title will be added to the list in the shape of the new downloadable PC version of Rockstar's Manhunt 2. No stranger to ratings controversy, the company's M-rated Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 2, and PSP versions of the game were released in late 2007 after being initially given an Adults Only rating by the ESRB due to its excessive violence. The games were released with some of the more gruesome content toned down, and the game went on to be a moderate success for Rockstar. The PC version is a download-only product, and can be pre-ordered prior to its November 6 release here.
To receive an "Adults Only" rating, the ESRB states "Titles rated AO (Adults Only) have content that should only be played by persons 18 years and older. Titles in this category may include prolonged scenes of intense violence and/or graphic sexual content and nudity." This differs from "Mature" rated games, which "have content that may be suitable for persons ages 17 and older. Titles in this category may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language."

Apparently Rockstar still does. Manhunt 2 isn't exactly a new game (it was originally released in 2007), but the PC version has the added allure of an A-O rating, and you just know there is that section of the gaming audience who will play it because of that ESRB rating.
