Koei's iPhone edition of its long-running and popular strategy game arrived in the iTunes app store today for $9.99.
Based on the traditional 14th century Chinese historical novel (considered one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature, no less) Koei's Romance of the Three Kingdoms franchise has been a staple of the turn-based strategy genre since 1985. There have been 11 core games in the series so far, and editions have been published on a wide variety of games systems including the PlayStation, the SNES, Genesis, Dreamcast, Saturn, PC, MSX, PC and Game Boy. There have also been five different mobile versions released in Japan.
Today, the publisher released its first iPhone game dubbed Romance of the Three Kingdoms Touch (iTunes link). As with other entries in the series it's a tactical simulation based on people and events from the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history (so that's the second and third centuries) and the game features 255 historical figures that populate five different war scenarios. Four of these are historical, and one fictional.
As with other editions, Romance Touch is certainly something for those of a hardcore strategy gaming persuasion, but the adaptation to iPhone certainly seems, at this early stage, very successful. The game is $9.99.
