Microsoft CEO thinks Natal will extend Xbox's lifespan

In a recent interview, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer talked about the power of Natal and the company's relationship with the Blu-ray format.

Microsoft CEO: 'you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives' for Xbox

Gizmodo recently had the chance to talk to Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO and noted fan of developers (YouTube). While the man oversees all parts of Microsoft's empire, the conversation naturally had a large focus on the company's video game console, the Xbox 360. Most notably, when asked about Blu-ray, Ballmer rejected the idea of adding an internal drive, saying "you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories."

Is this actually in the works, or just a misquote from someone outside of the core Xbox team? Gizmodo asked a Microsoft representative, who chose not to comment on the subject, making the possibility seem even more likely. You can find the entire chat about Blu-ray, as well as a semi-admission that Natal is a way to indefinitely extend this console generation, at Gizmodo.

UPDATE: Xbox reps are doing their best to stamp out this fire. The mouth of Microsoft's gaming division, Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb, updated his blog in response to the subject, saying that Ballmer was speaking about Blu-ray accessories for PC. Hryb also stated "we have no plans to introduce a Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360." Of course, "no plans" is still more committal than "never," so we won't consider the book on Blu-ray completely closed.

lol,it's gonna be shitty. i prefer my ps3 for hd content,my 360 streams netflix.

i don't see it being a huge success because of the money issues. unless they figure a way to lower the 360 or make the blu-ray pretty cheap it's gonna be a hard seller.

KILLPEOPLE

It would only be putting money into Sony, it's not like Microsoft created their own Bluray

So the PS3 is officially useless LOL... just kiddin guys, don't freak out!

If you can't beat them, pay them money to use their software for your own benefit, but you will most likely end up in the hole even more, and join them.

It's good at least it's not used for gaming at all unlike the ps3's blue ray drive which requires installations for games because of the slow constant read speed when different parts of the blue ray disc closer to the middle spins faster and the blue ray lazer can't read it fast enough at one speed. My point is, it's optional and a good thing for those who wants to enjoy blue ray movies on their next gen console, it's not a defeat, rather a choice.

TRUPREDATOR

this is a bad move for ms.the only way it will work is if they make the combined price of the br disc player and a 360, competitive with the ps3s price.not to mention im sure ms will have to pay sony rights.

The blu-ray is not bad, it's just late and it will probably cost an extra 100 dollars. I guess we just gotta wait and see what happens. Sony does not own blu-ray, it's just in all the PS3's.
