PS3, Halo 3: ODST top Sept. sales charts

The September 2009 NPD reports have been released, with the PS3 outselling the Wii despite Nintendo's price drop, Hao 3: ODST topping the software charts, and The Beatles: Rock Band beating Guitar Hero 5.

The September 2009 NPD video game sales report has just been released, and it looks like the price drop and introduction of the PS3 Slim is still working wonders for Sony's home console, as the PlayStation 3 outsold the Wii in September of 2009, by almost 30,000 units, selling 491,800 consoles to Nintendo's 462,800. It's worth noting that the Wii's price drop occured on September 27, giving the system just a week of lower-priced sales compared to the entire month. The Nintendo DS was still the top selling system for the month with 524,200 sold. Here is the entire hardware rankings for September.

On the software side, Halo 3: ODST was the big winner, pulling in over 1.5 million units sold and tripling its nearest competitor, despite coming out three weeks into September. While it's not at the level of Halo 3's first month sales of over 3 million, it's still more than enough to win the month by a large margin. The Beatles: Rock Band, released a week after Guitar Hero 5, was still able to beat its music-game competitor despite boasts to the contrary from Activision (via Destructoid), as well as a free copy of Guitar Hero: Van Halen promised with purchase. The PS3 version of Batman: Arkham Asylum flipped the script on the Xbox 360 version, which outsold it in August, most likely due to the large influx of new PS3 owners during September. Other games entering the charts this month were Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2. Here are the software results:

Some cool info here, but I'm really looking forward to seeing how October's numbers shake out. Will a full month of a lower price shoot Wii back into the number 1 slot? Will the PSP Go inject life into that platform's sales? Will Brutal Legend rock the charts like it rocked the critics? Tune in next month, same NPD time, same NPD channel!

WELL SUCK MY DICK!!! on a side note, WTF?!?! ps2 is STILL selling thousands?!?! and i cant believe Marvel outsold Batman. fucking crazy. i liked both, but i didnt even realize how famous MUA2 was. hopefully ps3 will not lose its seat at the throne next month, and hopefully Uncharted 2 will outsell Brutal Legend.

It's funny how fanboys cheer for their console LOL. Honestly who cares if the ps3 made the top for the first time. Its all about longevity. However, it's nice to see the wii slowing down a little.

Even as a ps3 owner myself, I have no idea why your so excited about a 140,000 difference. Or why anyone would be excited about sales for a month new hardware was released. Or sales during 1 month period. I agree with everything else though, Uncharted 2 is badass!!!

Where is uncharted?!... lol are you serious or just retarded. This is Septembers figures not Octobers, you can expect uncharted to be on the top of the software list in october. The game got 25 perfect ratings last time I checked and shifted most of its stock the first day. Lol sounds like the game is scaring you since you seem to be so closely monitoring it. It'll be ok fanboys, although I'm seeing deja vu all over again. This is why i didn't purchas an x-box. Microsoft doesn't have the momentum to push this console just as it didn't the original. That and they overcharge for crappy peripherals that come standard on the ps3.

P.S. Gaming legend, you are totally right it is about longevity, which microshaft cares nothing about. Where is the original x-box, i still see the ps2 at the stores. Sony's starting to gain momentum while xbox is losing it. Figures don't lie
