Next 360 and DS reportedly find hardware partners

It may be quite a while until we see new systems from Microsoft and Nintendo, but it looks like both companies are hitting up the major tech players to supply their systems' guts.

Next 360 and DS reportedly find hardware partners

This console generation has been going on for quite some time. The Nintendo DS is almost five years old, while the Xbox 360 is almost finishing its fourth year of existence. Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony have done an admirable job making their systems seem fresh with hardware redesigns and user-interface improvements via firmware, but it seems like the next consoles are finally in the works, if recent reports are to be believed. Rumors have sprouted today about the successors to the Nintendo DS and Xbox 360, with Nvidia and AMD being named as the potential hardware providers, respectively.

Technology news site Fudzilla opened the 360 rumor floodgates with a recent post about AMD once again snatching the rights to provide the GPU for Microsoft's home video game console. On the portable front, Bright Side of News, a site dedicated to covering the ins and outs of the world of semiconductors, is stating that NVidia's Tegra "System on a Chip" processor will be making portable Nintendo games look pretty. According to BSN, the chip chosen is also very conducive to replicating the DS' visuals, which bodes well for backwards compatibility. You can read more about both reports on PC World's Game On blog (here's the DS and 360 stories), where Matt Peckham, a guy with way more knowledge than I of PC graphic cards and chipsets dishes his two cents on the topic. What do you folks think? When are you ready to see successors to some of your current consoles?

With Nvidia and ATI mentioned as potential, I see this as just idle gossip as that is saying they will probably use a video card in the next console.

I still feel like the current generation has a lot of life left in it. I still love my DS and Wii, and my 360/PS3 friend still loves his systems. But if their just starting designs, then it should still be a while before they can release them. I know this generation is already starting to be old, but I don't think it's time for the new one yet. These ones still have so much potential.

I hear that the next XBOX will have a built in radar that will detect the exact time a red ring of death will occur.

I want to see a redesigned smaller XBOX 360. They will just have to make it the same width to support older hard dries. Unless they screw over older 360 users which I'm sre Microsoft would do.

You ,DARTHCRATS, are an idiot. I have never in my life heard of 620p... Do you even know what your talking about when it comes to high definition. There is only 480 i, 480p, 720i, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. I guess nintendo doesn't make high definition games cause high def to you is anything below 720 so they can pass of 480p as high def to you. OH AND P.S. EVEN IF YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT 720P WHAT IN THE HECK DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH GRAPHICS. IT'S RESOLUTION

i really dont care when microsoft comes out with there next xbox as long as it doesnt have so much damn problems like the 360 if its not the red ring of death then its error codes if its not that then they blame the disk's. im pretty sure most people would be far more impressed if they just built a reliable console

I just hope they don't follow in the PSPno's footsteps going all digital.... I have an iPhone for a reason... and i will continue to support physical Media. Call me old fashioned.
