Wii & DS most popular brands among kids

Nintendo's two video game systems have a lot of respect amongst the younger set, as a survey revealed kids enjoy the Wii & DS more than any other brand, including Disney, Nickelodeon, and McDonalds.

Wii & DS most popular brands among kids

Kids love these systems more than anything. Even their families.

Market research firm Smarty Pants set out to measure which brands were most successful with kids with a study the company calls Young Love. Over 4,700 kids aged 6 to 12 sat down with their parents and filled out a survey designed to measure just how much kids love roughly 260 different major consumer brands. Nintendo topped the list, with Nintendo Wii at #1 and Nintendo DS at #2.

Remember that this wasn't just a survey of gaming brands-- both Wii and DS beat out the likes of McDonald's, Nickelodeon, Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, and Disney to reach the top spot. Other gaming brands that ranked high in the survey's Top 100: PlayStation at #14, PSP at #31, Xbox 360 at #42, Mario at #50, the iPhone at #54, the GameCube at #76 (!), and Nintendogs at #96. You can check out a PDF of the survey's top 100 here.

So if you ever wonder how the hell Nintendo gets along with so little recognition from the mainstream gaming press, well, here you go. While most internet-going gamers are all about the PS3 and Xbox 360, Nintendo rules the elementary school set with an iron fist. So really, not much has changed for Nintendo in the past 20 years when it comes to the younger set.

THE VERDICT by Dave Rudden Dave Rudden's Avatar

While I'm a little wary of the reported results--seriously, Oreo came in third place?!--the fact that Nintendo can appeal to kids as well as older, casual gamers have shown that the company's winning by reaching outside of the traditional gaming audience.

Very interesting, so nintendo could care less what people who play 360 and ps3 think, because they dont want to be just one of the three, they want a console that kids can play on and not deal with online bullies. Smart move since most people don't compare wii to 360 and ps3, the two hardcore systems compete while Wii thrives, and in a different direction too.

If I had to number my favorite things... ever... my DS would be so high on the list. And I'm speaking as a 25 yr. old male. It's not that I think the DS is better than a PS3 or 360 i'm not saying that... it's just that myself, personally, has spent so many hours on my DS that it's basically become a part of me. Usually, it's just what I end up playing even though I have a high-def tv and 3 PS3 games on hold because any day now I'm going to figure out how Knights in the Nightmare actually works... Or I just HAVE to play Castlevania OOE over again as a new character. Or I just HAVE to level up my demons in Devil Survivor just a little bit more!!! I don't know what it is, I just love my DS. I love the accessibility, the brilliant selection of games, the stylus, the slick DSi design, the cameras, the microphone... okay I better stop. Thanks Nintendo!

I've always said that to be on top you have to appeal to kids who one day will get older. The fact that this is number one is really good news for Nintendo's future, especially when they are also appealing to older folks. Similar to kids from the late 90s and 2000s and the Playstation. To them Playstation is video game, while to me it still a corporation trying to take a piece of the pie with their greedy hands from the real video game companies. I always imagined that if I ran a brand the best thing to do in terms of keeping it successful would be to target kids, since they are always growing and new ones are being born each day as the current ones keep getting older.
