PSP Go discourages, iPhone encourages trade-ins

An interview with the chief marketing officer of electronics trade-in site Nextworth revealed the difference in customers willing to upgrade to two of the hottest portables.

PSP Go discourages, iPhone encourages trade-ins

They may not give you cash themselves, but Apple's strategy has made iPhone trade-ins easier than other portable gaming systems.

I recently had the chance to talk with Bob Wesley, the chief marketing officer of electronics trade-in site NextWorth. Where Nextworth differs from brick-and-mortar gaming retail stores like GameStop and person-to-person gaming trading sites like SwitchGames is that it allows users to trade in almost any form of electronics, be it game console, cell phone, or camera, and receive cash.

Naturally, many of the users are trading in their product in order to save money for newer tech products, so I asked Wesley about how the new iPhone 3GS and PSP Go have spurred trade-ins. His response revealed not only the mindset of the current upgrade-seeking customer, but the philosophies of the hardware developers too.

The PSP Go has not created an incentive to trade-in existing PSPs. Gamers need to hold on to their old PSP just to play their old games. The lack of upward compatibility of old games to the new PSP Go has created a disincentive to adopt this new product. We believe that more gamers who want to move to this new mobile computing platform will be looking at the alternatives such as the iPod Touch.

When Apple introduces a new iPod or iPhone, we do see a surge in trade-ins because they allow consumers to utilize their old games and music.

The entire interview will be up on GamePro.com soon.

THE VERDICT by Dave Rudden Dave Rudden's Avatar

I recently tweeted about my aborted attempt to trade-in my old PSP to GameStop, but this answer further ingrained about how difficult Sony has made upgrading to new hardware compared to the likes of Apple (and they're not even doing so great with it).

Got my old psp and still play it. Not looking to purchase the Go any time soon. I have too many games that i still like to pop in and play on my old psp. Have had my iPod touch for 2 years this december, and what makes me mad is that i purchased it for 400 bucks back then, and it was the 16 gig, and now the 64 gig is cheaper to buy. Dangit.

I have both an iPhone and a psp go and I must say that the iPhone is a hell of a machine more powerfull than the psp go. Psp go is just a cosmetic overhaul to 4 year old hardware which still puts out ps2 level graphics GT looks amazing on the psp. But in the end iPhone has more potential in terms of gameplay thanks to tilt and touch screen gameplay not to mention iPhone 3GS has a more powerfull CPU and more ram.

my psp-1000 was stolen with all my games so i don't mind the pspgo right now but not until they lower the price. the only thing preventing me from buying it is basically the price.

What are you trying to get at Game Pro!? As I recall sony isn't looking for people to upgrade. They are still supporting the PSP 3000 and UMD. It's just a different option for those who haven't gotten the system. I can see ya'll wanting to b@#ch if they cancelled the PSP 3000 and UMD but nobody's twisting your leg to upgrade. Just keep playing the one you already have. wahhhh wahhhh

NO THANKS. Unless they improve the touch screen drastically to incorperate a game pad what's the point. Stick to music.
