PlayStation 3 predicted as September's best-selling system

After months and months of Wii dominance, it seems like Sony may have finally taken the sales crown for September, due to the release of the lower-priced PS3 Slim.

How long since Sony's PlayStation 3 was selling pole position? Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter predicts they've finally grabbed the top slot in North American September hardware sales, reaching 410,000 units or a 76% improvement year-over-year. That's against Nintendo with a projected 390,000 Wii units (down 45% from last year) and Microsoft with a projected 350,000 Xbox 360 units (up 1% year-over-year).

A bright spot everyone can celebrate: In his note, Pachter forecasts September video game software sales of $750 million versus last year's $618 million, a 21% year-over-year upswing, and definitive return to double-digit growth after six months of double-digit declines.

Pachter predicts that September hardware unit sales will be 2,105,000 units--still down by 5% compared to September 2008--but notes the huge uptick over the last five months sales, which were down an average of 19%.

In related news, Sony's Patrick Seybold told Kotaku sales of the PlayStation Portable shot up 300% following the release of the company's new smaller, disc-free PSP Go. The launch also generated a "significant increase in revenue for [the] PlayStation Network, driven by a 200 percent lift in PSP game downloads purchased from [the] PlayStation Store" in North America.

NPD's retail sales report releases next Thursday after market close.

Combining a sleek new redesign with a lower price point paid off bigtime for Sony, and deservedly so. With the Wii's price drop only starting at the tail end of the month, it'll be interesting to see if Nintendo's system can reclaim the lead.

I agree with you 100%! I also can predict this stop will get fanboy's panties in a bunch. Xbots will say "we're still up by a couple million and Natal will be awesome. PS3 fan bitches will say how awesome the Ps3 really is and everyone is just starting to find out. Forgeting the fact the games look just like the 360's and maybe it had something to do with a lower price. The Wiitards will be in and out talking about everyone is copying them......sigh. My crystal ball has spoken. Now it's time to go to 1up and pick on the GAYMASTER.

I hope Sony is successful, all three consoles have their advantages.

I am seriously considering purchasing a PS3 slim to go along with my 360 and wii consoles. If not for the gaming system at least for the Blueray and up converter player. I saw this story on GameIndustry.biz and it tells about the losses Sony takes for every PS3 Slim sold. But, if they can make more great games that are must-buys and are PS3 exclusives, then they have just as good as a chance as any of the other companies to take a top ranking in sales but most important "profits".

I feel that if they can't balance their losses of each PS3 Slim sold with profits from peripherals and software, then we may be hearing a different story in the coming future.
