Sony's mysterious new motion controller is coming next spring, with a handful of launch titles announced.
The winner of the 'controller most likely to be mistake for E.T's finger' award.
At their TGS 2009 press conference, Sony revealed more details about its answer to the Wii Remote and Project Natal. The still-tentatively-named Sony Motion Controller for the PlayStation 3 will be coming out in the Spring of 2010, though the company did not distinguish whether this would be a worldwide release window, or just the controller's debut.
In addition to the games named in the press release below, the PlayStation blog reported that LittleBigPlanet and Resident Evil 5 were demoed with the product, leading us to believe that those games will also be patched via software download to become compatible with the upcoming accessory.
Motion Controller* for PlayStation 3 to Become Available in Spring 2010
Motion Controller (Unofficial Name) Equipped with High-Precision Motion Sensors, Combined With PlayStation Eye Camera, Delivers Whole New Entertainment Experience on PlayStation 3
TOKYO, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) today announced that it will release a new Motion Controller (unofficial name) for PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system in Spring 2010. The new controller, equipped with high-precision, highly accurate motion sensors, can deliver a whole new entertainment experience on PS3 when combined together with the PlayStation Eye camera(*1). Capable of recognizing and tracking a user's face and voice as well as body motion, PlayStation Eye can also output the player's image onto the TV screen. SCE will vigorously promote the expansion of this new experience only possible on the PS3 platform.
The newly announced Motion Controller is equipped with two motion sensors, three axes gyroscope and three axes accelerometer that can detect the controller's angle and movement held in the user's hand. Together with the PlayStation Eye camera for PS3 which can accurately track the absolute position of the controller, the controller can detect the natural and intuitive movement of the hand and reflect the precise movement on to the game. The sphere placed on the top of the controller is not only used to track the absolute position but can also give visual feedback to users by changing the colors or the illuminating patterns of the sphere. Furthermore, the new controller is also equipped with a rumble feature, familiar to the PlayStation DUALSHOCK series controller, delivering an immersive gaming experience to users.
Further expanding the new experience on PS3, SCE Worldwide Studios will deliver many exciting software titles for the Motion Controller in 2010(*2). SCE, with strong support from software developers and publishers, will deploy various measures to enhance the software title line-up for the new Motion Controller and vigorously promote the PS3 platform.

Makes me want to go back in time to read the comments on the Wii remote, and compare those comments to the comments on this thing.

i cant wait for this motion control. finally a motion controller that a company actually knows how to use, sense Nintendo cant come up with any good motion control games.

Xbox and ps3 owners commenting on how dumb motion control is compared to them suddenly loving it now. Although some people will be lazy no matter what.

You should invest in a spell checker, never mind motion controls.

Yup that's me. I like to sit down when I play video games, which I guess is going to be something of the past hahahahahha. Something tells me this isn't the answer for Sony to directly compete with the Wii. I don't know... I just think that consoles should concentrate on what they're already good at, instead of treading into territory they don't belong in. I could seriously see this thing bombing big time.

Both Sony and MS have a lot of catching up to do if they hope to take a piece of Nintendo's profitable pie... each one of those games listed supporting Sony's motion controller better be AAA games, if they're shovelware they can forget about it.

Does anyone even use the sixaxis for motion control? I've only used it like twice, Heavenly Sword was dope; sixaxis control for Warhawk was terrible. I'm not sold at this moment, but I won't knock it till I try it out
