Natal to revolutionize rhythm games

RedOctane evaluating Project Natal tech for new ways to use motion control in future Guitar Hero titles.

In a recent interview with Digital Spy RedOctane co-founder Kai Huang discussed the future of the prosperous Guitar Hero franchise.

The interview opens with a congratulatory nod towards RedOctane's ten-year anniversary, and while most of the questions are predictable (favorite song, instrument etc.) Huang does give an interesting answer when pressed on the recent remarks of MTV Games' Scott Guthrie regarding the incorporation of motion-sensing technology in future Rock Band titles.

Natal to Revolutionize Rhythm Games

Avatar support and new motion control tech promises to make future GH jam sessions even more surreal.

"We've definitely been evaluating Microsoft's Natal technology," replied Huang when pressed on the subject. "Natal is very interesting because there's so many different things you can do with it, whether it's the motion detecting, maybe sensing how you're playing, or the ability to use it for interactivity purposes and taking advantage of it for party purposes."

"I think the technology is very exciting," he continued. "It's likely that sometime in the future we'll have those technologies integrated into our games." No further details or concept videos of how this new tech might work have surfaced, so we took the liberty of linking our own example. Enjoy.

THE VERDICT by Alex Wawro Alex Wawro's Avatar If Natal can live up to even half the hype, it's inclusion in future rhythm games is a no-brainer, especially if it means my wicked guitar flourishes might finally be worth some bonus points.

I really don't care for "Natal" or motion controlls for that matter. To me, it's just a big gimmick that will have lots of companies throwing out shovelware games like this.

I would much rather take a keyboard or normal game controller over this crap, thanks.

Thang the xbox360 hating ps3 fantoys are in force (well at least there is one of them). This is going to be AWESOME. May make me finally play my first music game since parappa the rapper. Those buttons just seem ...not natural. This is a much better example.

Finally someone else who feels the same way about Natal. While I understand a lot of people will buy and like Natal, I prefer the controller method. Even in the comfort of my own home, I don't want to look like an idiot flailing my arms in the air to play the game, like most Wii games are. Hopefully they don't make this a necessity or developers just dropping controller-support games once Natal comes out.

Yeah... those buttons seem not natural, so nothing in your hands at all feels more like playing real music, right? People just need to start buying real guitars and instruments, this is getting ridicoulous. And with that said, I really want Beatles Rock Band LOL.
