Wii price drops to $200 on September 27

OMGNintendo reports that the Nintendo Wii will drop down from $250 to $200 in one week. Full story here.

OMGNintendo reported this story about a week ago when it first broke. GamePro ran with it and added word of the Toys R Us scan you see above, which mentioned the new $199 price. In the days since, similar scans of upcoming circulars showing the $199 price have appeared that are allegedly from Target and Best Buy.

Now the site Nintendojo is reporting that Nintendo has confirmed the price drop in a retailer conference call where an (anonymous) staffer was present. According to this staffer, Nintendo's representative also set a date for the Wii price drop, September 27. This would be consistent with everything known about the ad circular scans-- all seem to be set to hit during the first week of October.

I wouldn't say the Wii price drop is a lock just yet, but I'll be very surprised if the 27th rolls around and we don't hear about the new price. Retailers don't print ad circulars just to screw around with games (lol) journalists.

Im not surprised by this at all. Nintendo wants to continue their large margin of sales in comparison to the PS3 and 360.

They had to drop the price. With the PS3 Slim at $299 offering so much and the Xbox arcade being $200 offering more then the Wii, this was needed by Nintendo.
Good for all gamers. Cheers for competition

i disagree with that line the Wii was 250 last year and it still out sold Xbox360. when it drop to $200 it will continue to sale 360 and PS3.

Another Super smash bros. game would be much better news. (I know it won't happen until the next console)

I already have a Wii(along with millions of others) so this doesn't really affect me. But it will put an interesting twist on this holiday's console war.

It's still way to much. A Wii at $150 could have done WONDERS. That is when I will step up to the plate.

It will eventually; more a matter of time, as with any console. (I'm pretty sure all the Nintendo consoles have dropped in price after the first few years.)

Honestly, though, I suspect the price drop has little to do with competition from Sony and Microsoft and more due to simple supply and demand. Once the initial costs (such as setting up the factories to produce stuff) is covered and sales slow down enough, its normal for any companies to drop prices.

(The PS3 probably stayed expensive for a long time because Sony hadn't earned enough to recover from its initial costs. ::shrug:: )
