After a financially successful first installment, the Silent Hill movie franchise will be receiving a sequel, with some of the original crew returning.
(Really terrible) artist's rendering of the Silent Hill 2 movie poster.
Contrary to a lot of opinions, I thought the Silent Hill movie was great and very well done. As a huge fan of the Silent Hill video game series, it's difficult to not notice the amount of detail that went into making the movie as true to the games as possible. The ash covered town, the fact that fog seems to always be closing in on the character, the roads that are broken and end leading into an abyss, and hell even Pyramid Head and the nurses were straight from the games. I don't see how any fan going into the theater with an open mind could not like this movie.
Whether you are a fan of the movie or not, the original writer, Roger Avary, and original producer, Samuel Hadida, have signed on to do a sequel, according to Dread Central. The things that might set the sequel up for immediate failure is the fact that the original director, Christophe Gans, may not be returning for the second film. What makes this fact rather disturbing is Gans was the true fan of the game series on set. Without him, the film may lose its detailed references to the games. Another red flag is producer Hadida is known for his work on the Resident Evil films and well, enough said.
I would love to see a sequel to the Silent Hill movie, but I do not believe these are the right guys to do it. Even though there has been no announcement on the storyline of the sequel, in true Silent Hill fashion, the new movie should follow a completely different story of someone's fate who ultimately brings them to the creepy town -- not a continuation of where the last film left off. I guess only time will tell on whether Silent Hill 2 can break the trend of shitty game-to-movie adaptations and actually become something gamers are proud of. We will see.

I also agree that the first Silent Hill movie was one of the best(and truest translations from the original game) video game movies ever made. I've listened to all sorts of idiots say it had weak acting and terrible dialogue. Thats funny considering that none of the Silent Hill games are known for their shakspearian dialogue. They are more known for their claustaphobic atmospere and creepy scare factors, lovingly marinated with a bunch of "wtf" moments.
Like Dave said, you could definitely tell that the director of the first movie was a fan of the games because of how faithfully recreated the town was. Anyway, I have high hopes for this movie but we will see.

Just make it like silent hill 2 the game and it should be alright. I didn't find the first movie had an audience to anyone outside of playing the games and that means it's not appealing enough or well communicated thought the script.

Hopefully they learn from the mistakes of the first film. Mainly a better ending. Also, a lack of a subplot that goes nowhere would be nice.
I liked the first Silent Hill well enough, but there was definitely room for improvement.

I haven't seen the Silent Hill movie but I guess it's one of the very few video game movies that didn't suck ass.
Don't even get me started on the RE movies, they are so terrible, Paul Anderson needs to get punched in the face.

The movie is going to suck. No videogame adaptation will ever be good; until video games are taken seriously by the art community. That's when director's and writers actually will concentrate in making a good movie from a video game instead of focus on how to make a good trailer and money. DOOM is the best example of why video game movies are made the wrong way for the wrong reasons. WTF was that? And everyone who loved Final Fantasy Advent children can F themselves. That movie sucked and did not meet the greatness of the actual character and story designs the game actually had.
