Skate 3 coming next May

EA confirms development of a third Skate title and promises to bring gamers co-op gameplay, more customization options and the "camaraderie and competitive excitement of real-life skateboarding."

Electronic Arts dropped a press release today confirming that Skate 3 is in development by Canadian studio EA Black Box and is expected to release in May 2010.

Departing the familiar fictional streets of San Vanelona for the picturesque Port Carverton, Skate 3 is attempting to stir excitement with the promise of a new co-op gaming mode that offers players the opportunity to create their own custom team of extreme athletes. Gamers will be able to organize a team of fellow Skate 3 owners (or AI-controlled teammates if you don't have enough friends) and compete against other teams in challenges to advance their careers and secure bragging rights. These co-op challenges aren't broadband-exclusive, and can be completed offline with AI challengers.

Other new features championed by EA PR include the new skate.School (a beefy series of tutorials for new players) and skate.Create, a user toolset that promises players the opportunity to create their own custom graphics, skate parks and videos.

The Skate series has garnered positive reviews from GamePro editors and so the announcement of a new entry is welcome news for both gamers and EA Black Box, a studio with a troubled history. Skate 3 hits UK shelves in May of next year, and rabid fans can pre-order for exclusive access to the Fallen, Mystery and Zero skate teams as well as the Black Box Distribution Skate Park.
