2D HD Sonic in 2010, possibly with 3D graphics?

After almost 15 years, Sonic is finally making a return to 2D on consoles in a game with the code name "Project Needlemouse."
After an uneven history of 3D adventures, it looks like Sega will be bringing Sonic the Hedgehog back into his original dimension. Ten years to the day since the US launch of Sonic's first 3D adventure and the Dreamcast console, Sega debuted a trailer for a game codenamed "Project Needlemouse"
Although Sonic is not explicitly named during the teaser, the trailer features many signature sound effects from the original Genesis games. From the sing-song "Sega" intro to the ring clanging, there can be no doubt that this 2010 title will feature Sonic returning to his roots.
In an interview with GameSpot, Sega associate brand manager Ken Ballough was more direct about the trailer, as he talked about the reasoning for Sonic's next move, stating:
"Old-school Sonic fans have long asked to see Sonic return to a more 2D style of gameplay[...] Project Needlemouse is that critical first step that brings Sonic back to his 2D roots."
When asked if the game would include classic or redrawn sprites, Ballough told GameSpot that "You can definitely expect HD graphics." From that, one may infer that the game will not be comprised of sprites, but 3D graphics on a 2D plane. Expect to hear much more about this title from GamePro in the coming weeks and months.
While I'd prefer an HD sprite-based game, I'll take Sonic on a 2D plane in any form. This has been on many gamers' wishlists since the Xbox 360 launched, and we're finally getting it. If I can make a request Sega? Include Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and Eggman. That's it. No new animals, or lame ones introduced in the last few years.

the platformer parts in the Unleashed Sonic is the dopest parts, I hope this game isn't lame as hell tho.

as long as it is like the genesis sonics(1-3) then im A-OK with this. all the 3d sonic shit sucks.

The Adventure series was AWESOME and heroes was actually pretty good. Unleashed wasn't really bad either. I've wanted another game like SA.

Sonic Adventure was good when it was new, but it's aged terribly, and it's been all downhill from there.
That said, if Sega screws this up I'll never forgive them.

Its just about time Sega has listened to long time Sonic fans. I love the oldr 2D sonic games, enjoysed the ones on Dreamcast, but after that the Sonic series was ruined. I hoped Sonic Unleashed would be good, but it wasn't. I'd love to play a 3D sonic game that plays like the old 2D ones from the 90s, and I really hope Sega doesn't fuck this one up. If they do, I'll never pay attention to future sonic games again.
