Konami is bringing the greatest 2D run-n-gun game back again this Monday, when Contra Rebirth lands on WiiWare.

New Contra game on WiiWare next week

After a successful return to 2D form in 2007 via Contra 4 on the DS, I expected Konami would announce another retro-styled shooter in the series. What I didn't expect was that the release would come so soon after the announcement, as Konami announced today that a WiiWare-exlcusive Contra game will be debuting next week.

Contra 4 came out on the DS in late 2007, recieving a 4.5 and an Editor's Choice from yours truly. Hopefully, this game will continue the near-perfect dynasty of Contra on Nintendo platforms, instead of sinking to the depths of the putrid PlayStation Contras. Here are the details from Konami:

THE VERDICT by Dave Rudden Dave Rudden's Avatar

Contra 4 is one of my favorite DS games, so I have somewhat high hopes for this game. I wish the developers of the DS game were working on this one, though.

Yea...My wii has been collecting dust for the past 3 months...I am beginning to believe that this was just a fad...I have had friends selling their wiis back to get other systems and games.

The graphics look kinda bland and overly cartoony for a Contra game.. hopefully the gameplay holds up at least.

sounds like fanboys are jealous that wii owners get a contra game and they don't. I have a Wii but don't play it that much. Maybe I'll try this out. Its usually the games that look like this that end up being the most fun.

Awesome news. I've been playing Contra 4 a lot lately.

Continuing franchises the 'Mega Man 9' way is awesome.

Alien Wars FTW

Konami also released a Gradius Rebirth game.

I do! beats owning a playstation that freezes on you and you end up wasting your gasoline to take it back where you bought it to fight with the a$$ holes that sold it to ya, for them to swap it out and have do the same thing on ya. Musical playstions is not my choice of games to play!

The graphics look overly cartoonish but that doesn't really matter. All I want is awesome multiplayer gameplay. Speaking of which, on the bullet points at the bottom it says it has "local 2 player co-op". Does that mean you can't play two player multiplayer online? Cause if not: FAIL!!!
