Rockstar: GTA & music game coming to iPhone

Today Rockstar announced that two of their top projects are not only coming to the PSP this year, but also the iPhone.

Rockstar bringing GTA: Chinatown Wars & a music game to iPhone

Forget it, PSP. It's Chinatown Wars.

Rockstar Games posted two separate announcements today (here and here) revealing that two upcoming PSP projects--Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars and Beaterator--will also be coming to the iPhone this fall. No major details besides release windows were revealed for the two games, but Rockstar is promising to provide screens in the near future.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars released on the Nintendo DS earlier this year to high review scores but less-than-stellar sales, which may have prompted a PSP port. Beaterator will be a beefed-up version of a web application released on Rockstar's website in 2005.

The news briefs from Rockstar are reprinted below. Keep an eye on GamePro and iPhone Game of the Day for coverage of both the PSP and iPhone versions of these upcoming games.

We're proud to announce that Beaterator is coming to the iPhone? and iPod? touch this Fall. Previously announced for the PlayStation?Portable system, Beaterator features thousands of loops and sounds made by both Timbaland and Rockstar, and puts the power to make professional-level music at your fingertips in a format that's portable, accessible and fun.

Look for more info and screenshots from the iPhone and iPod versions very soon...

Beaterator isn't the only Rockstar title heading to Apple's new gaming platform this Fall. The critically acclaimed Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, currently available for the Nintendo DS? and coming October 20th for the PlayStation?Portable system, will also be making its way to the iPhone? and iPod? touch this Fall. Look out for screenshots coming very soon.

THE VERDICT by Dave Rudden Dave Rudden's Avatar

Very interesting turn of events. There's no harm in exposing these games to as large an audience as possible, but how will Rockstar scale the feature set of the PSP games to the iPhone's much lower accepted price range. It'll be interesting to see what comes of these two games.
