Prototype, Nintendo, EA lead June 2009 NPD numbers

Activision's free-roaming destructathon Prototype takes the top software slot in the June 2009 NPD sales numbers for North America, while Nintendo continues to wreak havoc with high sales of the DS and Wii.

A weak US economy and historically slow summer sales conspired to push North American hardware sales down. Down but not out: Nintendo led the way with robust DS and Wii hardware sales, while the Xbox 360 stayed resilient.

North American hardware sales: June 2009 (NPD Group)

  • 1. NDS: 766,500
  • 2. Wii: 361,700
  • 3. X360: 240,600
  • 4. PS3: 164,700
  • 5. PSP: 163,500
  • 6. PS2: 152,700

Software sales were led by the Xbox 360 version of Radical's open-world game Prototype. EA Sports also enjoyed a strong month led by its Wii Fit competitor EA Sports Active, a strong opening showing for Tiger Woods 10 for the Wii, and a nearly 50/50 sales split between Fight Night Round 4 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

With Nintendo making a strong showing, Cammie Dunaway, NOA's EVP of sales and marketing, offered the following quote:

?More consumers continued to gravitate toward products that offer quality experiences and great value for the whole family....Consumers again selected Nintendo systems for those experiences, particularly our hand-helds.?

Kind of a weak month for software and hardware sales, though it's not slowing Nintendo very much. Ouch at the PS3 sales numbers, though. The PS3 is awfully pricey for the current economy, but if Sony can get it down to $300, I expect the floodgates to open. Oh, and it's nice to see Infamous hanging in there. Good game!

Man, the Wii is still blowing doors... how much did Prototype sell on the PS3?

I dislike Cammie.

As for the sales, I'm really pleased to see Red Faction cracked the top 10; that game is incredibly fun.

UFC didn't chart for the PS3??? I can't believe Mario Kart Wii keeps churning out awesome sales. Great game btw.

To the person who posted this article, put your personal agenda aside, the fact that the PS3's 164,700 units sold, was its best month since March, which is the last time it sold more than 200,000 systems. makes the month of June a very good month for Sony, so why are you saying ouch on PS3 recent sales, yes everybody knows it's pricey, there no need for you to point that out, but you forget PS3 continues to sell well

also the month of June was a much kinder month to the industry, thanks in large part to being a five-week reporting period versus May's four-week period. not only were hardware sales up for every platform, but all but two games crossed the 200,000 sales mark -- twice as many as in May. so excuse me where is the kind of weak month for software & hardware sales, if it's better then last months sales

please reply back to this to clear this little confusion up/

Giggity.

Seriously though, inFamous would be selling way more if sony dropped the PS3 price. Heck, so would EVERY PS3 game

Dude if you put the numbers all together "Playstation brand" (sony) generated 108 million while 360 raked in 72 million... I know the ps3 sales are awful (163K) , but the combine income of the psp, and ps2 puts the playstation over the 360, in terms of June Income. so yeah its all good for sony.. Forget nintendo tho lol. those guys raked in 200 million plus with Wii and DS sales combine.

I thought we finally got rid of your dumb ass. You were the retard going around this site all last year saying how 2008 would be the year of the PS3 and how Microsoft and Nintendo were going to get crushed once MGS4 came out. How'd that work out for you and the PS3? That was a rhetorical question by the way.
Anyway, it's good to see the UFC game still doing good sales numbers. It's estimated to sell around 3 million copies worldwide by the end of the year and I have no doubt it will make it.
