In a recent interview, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates hints that the company's upcoming gesture-sensing controller dubbed "Project Natal" will be enabled for other platforms beyond the Xbox 360.

Speaking to reporter Ina Fried, Gates mentioned using Natal beyond "just games." Gates imagined using Natal to "manage your movies, music, home system-type stuff" using gestures. He also said that business computing could benefit from Natal gesture recognition, adding, "I think there's incredible value as we use that in the office connected to a Windows PC."

Minority Report's futuristic computer gets a step closer to reality, with Microsoft confirming PC applications for its upcoming Natal device.

Whether Gates is referring to a full computer operating system, such as Windows 7, entirely through Natal is open to debate, but the quotes prove that Microsoft is making plans for Natal to extend beyond Xbox 360 gaming.

Natal's hardware won't appear until 2010, but the device has garned quite a bit of buzz, with an appearance on the Jimmy Fallon Show and references on The Colbert Rapport.

I think this will be an overall HUGE success. Usuing it on tv and pcs as well as the 360s and most likely the console after the 360. Definitely going to be huge if it does waht it is claimed to do.

While this does sound pretty cool, it is time to READ BETWEEN THE LINES:

1. Bill Gates Retired from Microsoft awhile back.

2. Sales of Vista are in the toilet compared to XP.

3. People already asked aren't looking to upgrade to Windows 7.

4. Apple is doing way better than it has in the past.

5. Google just announced they are going to do a new OS, and possibly office applications.

This leads me to assume Microsoft is scared enough to have Mr. Important hype a new interface for computers just like Pretendo did with the Wii.

I can just imagine the pitch, just like commercials for Oxyclean or OrangeGlo:

Hi, this is Billy Gates....Are you tired of touching things to use your computer?

The hype for Natal is certainly big. I don't think it'll be a great as every one wants it to be... kinda like Wii. I kinda hope I'm wrong, but I can't see Halo-heads being happy flailing their arms around like a retard, like I've heard so much about Wii.

I don't like the look of this, I would probably use it for an hour cumulatively over a few days then toss it aside.

Bill Gates did not retire he stepped down form his chief executive officer job..He remains at Microsoft as non-executive chairman.

Microsoft will eventually take over the majority of gaming industry just like they did the OS industry. Apple, Google, and Sony are just flies on MS's shit!

iamthegamepro

while bill gates did retire he still owns most of the company and his word means a lot.

Ahh...guess I'll wait and see what kinda games come out from this. Hyped? Not really but I'll keep my eye on this one to see if it will be able to do half of what they want it to. I'll guess we'll see.
