RUMOR: PSP2 planned to be as powerful as Xbox, uses quad core GPU

The Sony rumor train continues, with an all new installment entitled: PSP2: Quad core GPU boogaloo.

Another day, another rumor for Sony and crew. Looks like this time, the rumors take a surprise turn in revealing tech specs for an upcoming PSP2 (No, not the PSPgo, but a true successor to the PSP). While this seems a bit shady as Sony just spent a great deal of time and effort promoting the PSPgo, it doesn't seem wholly implausible that Sony would already be investing in newer technology for their hand held console.

RUMOR: PSP2 planned to be as powerful as Xbox, uses quad core GPU

The PSP could finally get a true successor in the near future, if rumors of a PSP2 prove correct.

According to Eurogamer's Spanish outpost (Via Digital Foundry), a newer version of Imagination Technologies owerVR SGX543MP chip - codenamed Hydra - will form the foundation of the PSP2, which in its improved state would be a quad core chip. Apparently, the performance would then be able to match that of Microsoft's original Xbox.

It is also claimed that the new chip would be able to run Open GL 2.0, DirectX 10 and will double as both a graphics unit and CPU, allowing Sony to keep costs and power consumption to a minimum.

Again, this is all just speculation as Sony was quick to comment, "we do not comment on rumor and speculation," but, all the same, there could be some truth in the matter.

And no, there was no mention of a second analogue stick.

Umm. I would be happy with my hands being less cramped, a second joystick, and a decent lcd screen that doesn't "ghost." I really don't care if it's more powerful, if it can launch nuclear missles, or if it can think for itself. Oh, also, some original games that are rehashes of PS2 games would be nice too....

I plan to be as powerful as a bear and a shark mixed into one........but it doesn't mean its going to happen.

So why don't they just say it will be more powerful than the PS2 instead of bringing up the xbox?....Man,... Sony are still a bunch of dicks, and will never learn to keep their FN mouths shut...... and they wonder why some of us turned out backs on them..

Probably because the Xbox was much more powerful than the PS2.

In any case, I do not think there is any truth to this rumour. I mean, what happened to their 10-year life cycle?

Why would Sony be thinking about PSP 2? when they haven't release PSP GO, which they told everybody the direction they would be going.. thanks Sony for putting this stupid rumor to rest, i think these rumors are killing Sony, by giving gamers who believes into this hope. for once can everybody leave Sony alone, and i don't know, mess with Nintendo. how come there never in any headlines this summer. or try Microsoft

Gamepro is one of those sites that has hurt the sales of PS3 this year

Again this is just rumor and speculation, next time read Sony comments you stupid dick, try following your own advice and shut up.. these tech specs are all made up, Sony only focus is making sure the PSP GO Sells on it's release date, and PS3 of course.. but dam stupid fanboys comments like your really pisses me off.

that's why i'm glad i'm not a fanboy, in other words i'm better then you

It's weird. I think Sony's trying to figure out what to do with the PSP. The hardware sells, but the game sales are in trouble. Going all-digital distribution is the key for the PSP's future, I hope they know this.
