Tekken 6: Unlockable characters 'outdated' says series director

Looks like the days of unlocking characters could be numbered, as Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada calls the process "outdated."

It's a staple of the fighting game genre to have unlockable characters. Mortal Kombat has always done it, Super Smash Bros. has always done it, and Tekken has always done it. But, not anymore, says Tekken series director Katsuhiro Harada. In an interview conducted with VideoGamer.com at Namco Bandai's Europe event, Harada explained the original uses for unlockable characters, and the game feature's subsequent demise.

"Why we locked the characters originally was that in the arcades, it was kind of to extend the life of the game by gradually unlocking characters. And also with the home versions as well, because you can rent games or whatever, it was to protect us against that," said Harada.

"That's kind of outdated now though, especially with online play. If we were to have locked characters it would irritate a lot of people, to be playing against others online and to not have all the characters available. So I think it's no longer useful."

Get your scantilly clad characters right off the bat in Tekken 6 as unlockable characters are a thing of the past.

Tekken 6 is set for release on October 27, 2009 and will feature 40 characters which will all be available as soon as you press play, for better or for worse. The game will be available for PlayStation 3, PSP and Xbox 360 consoles.

of course its outdated they would rather have you spend money and buy the characters instead of simply "unlocking them" such a shame

Great I will NEVER play Tekken again. In every single fighting series unlocking characters is the best part. Fuck Tekken, they just ruined the series.

This is great news.....as long as it doesn't mean we will have to buy the extra characters RE5

This is shortening the life of the single player campaign and for those who aren't set up to xbox live/psn, its diminishing the value of this game. Working towards getting new characters has always been a highlight of fighters in my opinion as it gives you a set goal to work towards. Thankfully, with achievements we still have black and white objectives to work towards but the lack any real value other then bragging rights. I noticed that Blazblue also did this, and while its by far the best fighter I've played in a long time, the lack of new characters to fight for was disappointing.

40 characters is a great line-up. I was about to go on a tirade that completely denounced DLC. =)

Locking characters has its cons and pros. Nintendo made some astoundingly dumb game design decisions when making Smash Brothers. However like some else mentioned, character outfits distinguish players and are bragging rights for online play. Having your manly beast character wear some pink lingerie is a right you should earn. I just don't want to play for 20 hrs to use Snake.

This is a real shame to hear, as I grew up playing Tekken and loved playing the games to death to unlock all the characters.....*sigh*
