Siliconera reports that Sony has patented new technology that allows the PlayStation 3 to play all PlayStation 2 games. The article explains that the technology works by emulating the PS2's Emotion Engine, which would enable the PS3 to be backwards compatible with PS2 games. This is a feature that was present in the first generation of the PS3 but was later dropped as newer models were introduced.

Hey Patrick don't forget about Jak and Daxter The Lost Frontier.
Jesus Christ that was fast.
Good call tho. How could I forget The Lost Frontier? Probably the biggest PS2/PSP exclusive coming out soon.

I think there's a good chance this will be included in this update.

Ok, this story is a bit confusing to me. So it's going to emulate a PS2, right? How exactly is emulation a new technology? For example, the 360 emulates regular XBox games, and the Wii emulates N64, SNES, NES, etc. Why does this require a patent? There's something missing in the story. I hope this is not Sony exaggerating again, making people believe that they've just created something beyond unbelievable, like they did with the PS2 emotion engine, or the PS3 14x more powerful than a home computer.
