Gamasutra reports that only half as many gamers are aware of the upcoming shooter Modern Warfare 2 due to the fact that "Call of Duty" was dropped from its title.

According to a new survey by tracking firm OTX, since Infinity Ward changed the name of their anticipated FPS game from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to simply Modern Warfare 2, 40% of the gaming population knowing about the game dropped down to 20%.

"Up until the beginning of May, OTX had been tracking the title as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. More specifically, we asked a representative group of gamers in the U.S. whether or not they had heard of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. At that time, approximately 40 percent of all gamers in the U.S. claimed that they had heard of this title.

However, once it became clear that Activision was positioning the title as Modern Warfare 2, OTX removed 'Call of Duty' from the consumer survey, and the awareness levels dropped to 20 percent. In other words, the Call of Duty brand association essentially doubles the awareness for the game. That is quite a remarkable statistic."

This will have no effect on sales. I dont think the kids taking the survey were to bright.

I'm surprise if it's really 50%. I knew for a while they droped the Call of Duty name. It don't change a thing I still look forward to it. A shame the caned the Iraq game, another one I was looking forward to. Just because there are too many uptight idiots. No matter what WW2 will always be the worst war and lok how many games are based on that. Iraq was way easier than it was back in WW2.

I would be willing to bet, there is a 100% chance Call of Duty will be added back into the marketing if the name recognition stays at this reduced level.

In any case, my son and I can't wait for the game to be released.

People who took the survey, where not really fans of the franchise or Infinity Ward. If they were real fans (like me) they will have got the survey right and also would know why they drooped the call of duty title and why treyarch is involve with the franchise.
