GamePolitics reports that 2K Games was developing a new video game in the Duke Nukem series that's entirely separate from Dukem Nukem Forever for PC or the sidescrolling Duke Nukem Trilogy game for DS and PSP. The new game, called Duke Begins, was revealed during the court battle between Take-Two Interactive and 3D Realms.

Duke Begins, which began development in 2007, was originally scheduled for a 2010 release date, but has now been "halted or otherwise cancelled" according to Apogee.

Read the following court document excerpts below for further details on Duke Begins.

On October 22, 2007, Apogee, Take-Two, and 2K Games entered into an agreement in which Apogee granted 2K Games the exclusive right to develop and publish a new videogame based upon Apogee's Duke Nukem franchise. The new game was given the working title of "Duke Begins" and is not the same game as the DNF game.

The original development schedule for the Duke Begins game provided that the game was to be completed and commercially released by mid-2010.

Take Two and/or its subsidiary 2K Games halted or otherwise cancelled all development work by the third-party game developer on the Duke Begins game in April 2009 without Apogee's approval or consent.

THE VERDICT by Patrick Shaw Patrick Shaw's Avatar I wonder what Duke Begins was going to be like. A direct sequel to Duke Nukem Forever? A spinoff of the series? I say they just release both games as downloads in whatever development stage they were in before the s- hit the fan. I'll pay $20 for a half-finished game.

I don't even believe there are any made up levels, just some still photos.

Sorry everybody but Duke is dead, maybe we might see the ones for the portables but I'd be surprise if there was a console version, a shame really.

Enough Duke Nukem news already. Why do you insist on announcing a game that isn't even relevant anymore?

This is to bad. And no not "Enough Duke Nukem news already". A lot of people love Duke Nukem, so it is relevant. And you don't not know if these games will be released or not. A lot could happen. Nukem is in high demand. And what is your problem with Duke Nukem? Fun shooters with a lot of personality and laughs. I'll take a Duke Nukem game any day. Better than all of these generic shooters we keep getting.

Duke was the original badass- in a funny awesome way... Unlike the overly testosteroned and forced macho of Gears

Yes Virginia........There is a Duke Nukem!

It's about time that there is additional news to put Take-Twos allegations in better context. I really hope 3DRealms is able to rise above the BS and finish their Opus Magnum!

Greatness87

ll i need to hear is "I'm ready to kick-ass and chew bubble gum, and i'm all outta gum" and im sold.

This character isn't important enough to be garner this kind of attention. The gamers that played the original game are now older, and the rest couldn't give two shits about it anymore.

Why not put your thinking caps on developers and come up with the next NEW action hero... it's really not that hard to do.... and this way you'll OWN the rights straight up without all this courtroom nonsense.

It's time to move on, Duke isn't worth this kind of drama.
