Miyamoto confirms 'Demo Play' for New Super Mario Bros. Wii and future titles

Recently, in an interview conducted by USA Today, Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed Nintendo's patented "demo play" would make its way to the Wii starting with the upcoming New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Nintendo has a reputation, for better or for worse, of trying to reach a wide audience, especially with their current generation system the Nintendo Wii. There's no doubt that the system has appealed to people who would otherwise ignore gaming all together, such as parent's who find the system to be "family friendly." But, it seems Nintendo wants to encourage consumers even further, by implementing a "help feature" for gaming which is tentatively called, "demo play."

Nintendo's tentative 'demo play' will be included in this years New Super Mario Bros. Wii

In an exclusive interview conducted by USA Today, Shigeru Miyamoto recently announced that "demo play" will be included in this years upcoming New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

"In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, if a player is experiencing an area of difficulty, this will allow them to clear troubled areas and take over when they're ready" confirmed Miyamoto, through his translator. "And yes, we're looking into this for future games, too" Miyamoto says.

From what we know of it, the concept of "demo play" is to allow players who find a particular level too difficult, the option of pausing the game and allowing the game to take over and complete the level for them. If they wish to continue, all they have to do is press any button to resume gameplay. The idea proposes to eliminate the need for a strategy guide or internet walkthrough, and will allow consumers who are young or new to video games to find an easier entry point into a game experience.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is expected this holiday season, with "demo play" included.

THE VERDICT by Sean Mirkovich Sean Mirkovich's Avatar You know, my opinion of this is pretty narrow minded. I think it's an extremely lame concept that diffuses the whole point of gaming. Sure, it might invite younger kids to "play" games, but they're not really "playing" anything if they sit back and watch a level defeated for them. But, whatever I could say on the subject I feel has already been covered by one of USA Today's users, Payton_34, who wrote, "Are you f%^$ing $#!??ing me???????????? This is ridiculous! This is an anti-social equivilant to having your older brother get the last alien in Space Invaders for you!!! I swear if I saw someone use that feature I'd smack em upside the head." God speed Payton_34, wherever you are.

Yeah...im with ya dude..thats the lamest shit!..I guess Nintendos strategy now is the Infant and the so old thier fartin dust and damn near braindead demographics now..any one over the age of 5 can beat most games on the Wii.....useless

Violence is never the answer when it comes to how someone plays their games.

I find this feature to be rather lame (mostly because it's not something I would use), but at the same time be helpful for the really young players or those very new to gaming. If they have a sense of achievement, after using the demo play, they'll go back and try to beat the level themselves, probably the way they just saw it done.

For everyone else, don't use it if you don't like it. It's not a feature meant for people who frequent this kind of site. And since it is purely optional, I don't see what the big deal is. No one is forcing you to use it, and if someone else is fine with using the demo play to help them get through a game, that is their business. Play how you want, and let others play how they want.

This feature seems to have a double edged sword. On the bright side, this feature helps the inexperienced gamer to overcome seemingly impossible obstacles that could possibly turn them away from video games, but on the negative side, it could make the game far too easy and give the player less motivation to actually have to think their way through the problem because let's face it, there's nothing like the satisfaction of overcoming an extremely difficult obstacle.

Wow...that's pretty pathetic. I love you, Nintendo, I have for many years but are you serious? Really? Did I just read that?

Demo Play? How very Nintendo of them! Yeah that is very lame! A better idea would be that when you hit pause and choose demo play, the thing would show you how to do it, and play for you, but when you un-pause, you're back to where you were before you paused... so you could learn how to do it and then at least do it yourself.

You want to watch the game playing for you and resolve obstacles that you can't achieve? Great. I have a really simple solution:

DON'T PLAY VIDEO GAME AT ALL!!!

Why would you play if you can't do it by yourself?
