Wii vs. Project Natal: Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto reveals in an interview that he believes controller-less gaming won't work.
In an interview with Wired, Nintendo game designer and producer Shigeru Miyamoto defends the Wii's motion-sensing controllers and reveals that he is skeptical about the controller-less gaming technology of Project Natal which is coming out for the Xbox 360. After explaining that gamers need something to physically hold in their hands, Miyamoto refers to the Xbox 360's Project Natal and the PS3's motion controllers as "very basic technology."
"As someone who thinks of things from the perspective of creating interactive experiences, I really think that you do need something [to hold]. I don't think as a creator that I could create an experience that truly feels interactive if you don't have something to hold in your hand, if you don't have something like force feedback that you can feel from the controller." -Miyamoto
During the interview, Miyamoto went on to acknowledge that while Nintendo Wii's competitors, the PS3 and the Xbox 360, have shown at E3 that they're focusing more heavily on motion sensing technology, he believes that Project Natal's elimination of a controller is a big mistake.
"Looking at what the other companies have shown here at E3, it feels like they have finally obtained the very basic technology for doing motion control, but perhaps they still have to learn how to use that and take advantage of it in an interactive experience."

I don't agree with the "very basic" comment... I mean, the Natal machine itself is pretty basic, but it has to have some pretty impressive programming for it to work. I do agree that players want to hold something... something that has buttons. At least for me. I think PS3's motion controller looks WAY more fun that Natal. Looks like they took the Wiimote and pretty much perfected 1-to-1 controls. Anyone who laughed at Wii for years and that is now blown away by Natal is retarded.

At first, everyone was skeptical about the Wii controllers too. But look at it now. Let's give Project Natal the chance it deserves and we'll see. If it works, good. If not, too bad for Microsoft...

I think what Miyamoto should say instead of that "we are so f**k*d since PS3 & 360 are finally competing with us" lets face it Natal looks pretty good and the new motion controller of PS3 is just jaw dropping compared to the Wii motion but with HD graphics and more core games.
I believe this year will finally put all the systems in there right place, Wii never deserved to be on top Compared to Sony's & 360's efforts in this gene they both proved there strength but people yet chosen to buy Wii because it looked cooler at first, while PS3 was straggling I never lost faith that sony will win this war at the end and with this year's E3 I guarantee you sony will end up at the Top again...

I love ya Miyamoto, but you just need to admit it and face facts. Microsoft and Sony are gunning for you and their technologies are bigger, better, and more sophisticated than 10 Wii Remotes put together. You know it, I know it. Instead of throwing lies out there that nobody is going to believe, since we all saw the live demos of Microsoft's and Sony's superior technologies, you can't expect us to believe you. Sorry, but even though I do not agree with what Microsoft and Sony are doing, turning their back on the Hardcore to try and make more money with the Casual Crowd, that doesn't mean that I am an idiot, Mr. Miyamoto.

I do agree with him as far as wanting to have some sort of controller(s) in my hand(s), but in no way would I describe Microsoft's or Sony's new motion tech as "very basic".

What is this guy talking about? "Very basic", is there anything more basic than the Wii??? The 360 is onto something huge right now, and his words come off as very nervous. The PS3's motion sensing also looked very impressive, I actually wanted to play with that controller when I saw them demoing it. I had a Wii, and wasn't real thrilled. The controls are way to clunky and are not precise at all. I think we are going to see a dramatic market shift once Microsoft and Sony get their products out.

After playing some games like SMG, RE4, and Metroid Prime 3 I understand what he means. The way those games feel cannot be recreated on the Natal, but I'm sure, depending on how creative the developers get, there are going to be some games that can only be played on Natal. Plus people are going to buy it because it looks cool. The Sony controller is just like Wii with motion plus, so I don't get how anyone is saying that it's going to blow the Wii remote out of the water, especially since by the time it comes out it's going to be pretty late in the system's life cycle.

Isn't that what they said about the Wii-Mote. Too basic, gamers need buttons. I'm in!
