New Super Mario Bros. jumps from the DS to the Wii

Starting off a generally lackluster press conference, Nintendo announced New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii at E3 this morning.

It wasn't all that much of a press conference compared to the glories of yesterday's Microsoft, EA, and Ubisoft events. Nevertheless, Nintendo did start the day off well enough with its reveal of New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii: a remake of the now-classic DS game with Wii-specific features. Players will be able to run and jump cooperatively (we saw four players on the screen at once) as Mario, Luigi, and their toad friends, in an environment that looks fresh, clean, and fun.

The gameplay demo we saw also showed off a new powerup: the propeller suit. With the suit and a quick shake of the controller, your character shoots up into the air and floats slowly back to the ground. You can even activate it in midair, which means you can avoid previously terminal falls into deep, scary pits.

Yup, my mistake. I misspoke when I said "remake"; I meant "re-imagining." That's what I get for scooting these babies out without an editor looking over my shoulder! - Dan
