PSP Go leaked: 16 GB drive, no UMD, download-only

Days before E3 2009, images and a video of Sony's updated version of the PSP, the PSP "Go", has been leaked thanks to the latest June edition of Qore.

Once again, the internet proves to be a harsh mistress in keeping development secrets under wraps. The latest victim is Sony's new PSP Go, which was leaked in online images and video. Ironically, the leak comes from Sony's own monthly interactive video series Qore, which can be downloaded on the PlayStation Network. The new episode went live early and as the video below shows, someone captured it before it was taken down.

The video shows that the new PSP Go will have 16 GB of flash memory, as well as Bluetooth support, and will have a monitor that is 43% lighter than the original PSP, but will be a little bit smaller at 3.8 inches. John Koller, the man from Sony featured in the video also relates that UMDs will be a thing of the past as everything will be downloadable, something he says, "a lot of consumers are going to like."

The video is sure to be taken down at some point, so if you can't find it here, try Kotaku.

The video also notes that there is going to be a bigger emphasis on games for Sony, and such titles as Gran Turismo, Little Big Planet, Jak & Daxter and a new Metal Gear Solid are all supposedly to be announced at E3. Could this be Kojima's big secret behind their "Next" website? I suppose that's still up for discussion.

The new PSP Go is bigger than an iPhone, yet smaller than the original PSP.

Assuming this leak isn't an elaborate hoax, the PSP Go is a bit smaller than the UMD-equipped previous models. As Kotaku notes, the PSP Go is bigger than an iPhone but lighter. It's also slimmer than the original PSP, yet the new screen is smaller by half an inch to the original.

First look at PSP 'Go' leaked: Smaller screen, 16GB and a new Metal Gear?

It's also smaller than the DSi with a bigger screen. But not by much, as Sony cut the PSP's original screen down by half an inch.

The new design looks pretty sleek and uses a slide-out function, possibly inspired by Sony's Mylo 2 device, and looks to remove some of the original buttons such as display, sound, and volume. The PSP Go will not replace the PSP-3000, which will be sold along the new model. According to the video, the PSP Go is set for release later this fall.

Stay tuned as GamePro covers more breaking news from E3 2009.

THE VERDICT by Sean Mirkovich Sean Mirkovich's Avatar As our dear Dave Rudden pointed out before his pseudo-death on GamePro news, in terms of the PSP, I think Sony should be focusing more on their games than on the hardware they are providing. I'm also not crazy about the downloadable only feature. If they're trying to re-invent the PSP, it just seems odd that they didn't provide both options of UMD and digital downloading into one new product, rather than dividing gamers who maybe want both options instead of having to choose one. It almost renders it useless to those who already have a PSP-3000 and want to continue to play games they've purchased on UMD. That, or at least they don't want to have to purchase the games they love again in downloadable form, if they already have it on UMD. It all just seems a bit silly. Really, I wish the industry would just focus back on the games rather than all this hardware/peripheral stuff. What's the point of all that junk if you have nothing decent to use it on? All the same, could be pretty neat. Assuming this isn't a big hoax however, but my assumption is that that video is just too cheesy not to be real.

How is it considered leaked if Sony themselves released there own video they made, and why would they release it and decide to remove the videos all of a sudden?

No UMD drive = smaller, thinner, lighter, cheaper, and more battery life. I hate carrying little discs around..maybe there's a way to trade in UMDS for files or something.

My take is that a small population will take to the PSP Go. Not having physical media on a gaming system will not carry over to many folks. It will be interesting to see how this goes for Sony.

LOL talk about hypocrisy

DSL to DSi= "Why not make a new handheld instead of adding useless features blah blah blah Nintendo sucks blah blah"

PSP to PSP go= "Why make a new console blah blah blah just make better games blah blah"

Seriously guys! Make up your mind!

Sorry but this looks like an absolute turd. Smaller screen? NO UMD?
No touchscreen? The placement of that analog stick is absolutely
atrocious. Like the verdict said, current PSP 3000 owners will have no
reason to DOWNGRADE.

I was thinking the same thing. Plus the guy who wrote the verdict is classic idiot who's pretty much hating on Sony. I didn't see this type of response in the verdict about the DSi when it first dropped. So many people were complaining about UMD, and how it needs to be ditched. And now, it won't last long WITHOUT it? They praised the new gaming system that allows you to stream games without having to purchase physical software, but they shoot down Sony's move to bring the PSP Go!? How about we just abandon downloading games all together. That's a smart move huh? Puhlease, guys. Make up your damn mind.

If you listen carefully they are talking about e3 in the past sense. The video was supposed to come out after e3. Someone made a booboo. Someone will get fired.
