PS2 outsells PS3, while Nintendo places 1st on all fronts

With the release of the Nintendo DSi, Nintendo has taken a distant lead in both hardware and software sales, leaving Sony and Microsoft behind in their wake once again. Yet, April's sales weren't as bad as previously reported. In fact, in the month of April, 2009 ranked as the second best performance in the industry's history.

April Sales: PS2 outsells PS3, while Nintendo places 1st on all fronts

April sales dip a bit for 2009. But, they're not as bad as some have proposed.

As it was reported across the gaming community, April wasn't the most stellar month for gaming sales, yet in an article by Matt Peckman on PC world, NPD analyst Anita Frazier notes that April 2009 is still "the second-best performance for the industry in the month of April, besting April 2007, which is the previous second-place holder, by 26 percent." She also notes that NPD's year-to-year comparisons can be misleading and hard to analyze.

In terms of hardware sales, it's no surprise that the Nintendo DSi snatched first place, what with being released only a month and half ago on April 5th. Yet, what is surprising is that the PS3 was bested by its own predecessor, the PS2, by over 45,000 units. I suppose it's not so hard to understand as the PS2 recently had a price drop to $100, but even so, it acts as a biting commentary on Sony's pricing plan for the PS3, which has received less than enthused cries from the gaming community over the years.

NPD's Hardware Sales #'s:

  • 1.04m - Nintendo DS
  • 340k - Wii
  • 175k - Xbox 360
  • 172k - PlayStation 2
  • 127k - PlayStation 3
  • 116k - PSP

As for software sales, Nintendo still dominates with Wii Fit, Pokemon Platinum, Mario Kart and Wii Play , which are all still outselling mainstream games such as The Godfather II and Resident Evil 5. Perhaps another worry for hardcore gamers, as the market is quickly being flooded with more family friendly fare than more adult oriented games.

NPD's Software Sales #'s:

All the same, Peckham points out in his article, that NPD's numbers don't really reflect the games industry as well as they could, citing an important fact that they don't take into account PC and downloadable games. Yet, although April did not turn out as profitable as some would have liked, in the months to come we will be seeing releases such as inFamous, Red Faction: Guerilla Wars, The Legendary Starfy, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and Fight Night Round 4, which are sure to draw in fans aching for something new to tackle on their respective systems.

THE VERDICT by Sean Mirkovich Sean Mirkovich's Avatar While I'm not surprised Nintendo is dominating, it is a little disheartening as I fear that developers could be further encouraged and/or pressured to produce products that are less about gameplay and more about trendiness. Doesn't anyone realize that once these kids grow up, they'll realize how badly developed these games were? Why not try and make a product that lasts throughout all ages? A game that people will reflect on, feel nostalgic about and want to play over and over again, no matter how old they get. I feel that sadly, this is less the goal these days. Also, I'm not surprised that the PS2 is selling better than the PS3. I desperately want a PS3 myself, we all do, but the price is still too daunting to embrace. Here's hoping E3 might change that.

I don't think there will be any ps3 price drop, I think what they are planning is to introduce the slim line at the same price. Just a guess. In regards to the wii, couldn't agree more, I am afraid the developers don't realize that grandma and my older sister, who got a wii, becuase that is what was trendy, don't actually buy any games. They are still playing wii sports, and using the wii fit.

Wow, the PS3 sales are REALLY low. I'm really surprised to see them barely over 100 k. Then again all of them are pretty damn low, but that is nuts.

BWAHAHAHA!!! The truth hurts & furthermore I find it ironic & fittingly moronic that your avatar of Jack Nicholson as the Joker is ALSO known for another equally fitting famous movie quote... "YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!" The BS3 SUX & the numbers PROVE it.

No it doesn't. it just means we got some broke ass people out there! JK. Big shocker with the PS2 though.

Another 12 thousand units and the Psp would have outsold the Ps3 too. Considering Sony only loses $10 on every PS3 sold they need to start making bigger sacrifices. But you never know what they'll have in store for E3.

I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE THAT MARIO KART AND NEW SUPER MARIO, BOTH FOR THE DS, ARE STILL SELLING THAT WELL. ANYWAYS... I WANT A DSi!!!!!!!!!!! ALSO PUNCH-OUT! FOR THE Wii.
