Mysterious Metal Gear website updated with countdown

Is this a countdown to the next Metal Gear title in Hideo Kojima's titanic stealth series? An update to this strange website has some new clues for us to ponder. Could it be Metal Gear Solid... 5?

Well, the countdown has officially begun. No one knows for sure exactly what Kojima Production's weird website is hinting at, but in just a few days (near the end of May 22, to be precise) we'll find out what's going on. The "Kojima Production Next" website has been updated with a countdown, along with other clues.

A flash of lightning occasionally illuminates a giant '5' across the screen. Hmm. Metal Gear and the number '5' -- what could it mean?

Occasionally, a flash of lighting will illuminate a faint, stylized "5" symbol across the page, while the winds blow faintly in the site's looped audio file. As mentioned last week, a look at the page's source info highlights a few choice keywords: "Hideo Kojima, MGS, METAL GEAR, NEXT, game, konami, kojima game, KJP, and Kojima Production". Along with that, we've had various clues leading up to this announcement, pointing to a new Metal Gear Solid (MGS5?).

  • Raiden has been rumored to star in the next Metal Gear Solid, as his silhouette was briefly shown in a slideshow during Kojima's keynote with the words "THE NEXT MGS".

  • Kojima Production's website displays prominent flashes of lightning. In Japanese, thunder and lightning translates as "Raiden," which is also the name of the main protagonist in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. That's probably no coincidence.

  • Former Kojima Productions assistant producer Ryan Payton has already confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 5 was in production when he left the company.

This photo fueled a lot of rumors at GDC 2009. Move over, Snake. Raiden might be stealing the spotlight for good this time.

It all started with an email sent to a select number of video game journalists, containing only the subject header "T [minus] 3 days" and the following URL: http://www.konami.jp/kojima_pro/next/. Then, an advertisement in last week's issue of Famitsu Magazine teased us further with a photo of what looked like a simple landscape. Upon closer inspection, readers noticed mysterious figures buried in the horizon, as well as an ominous-looking house partially concealed in the scenery.

Now, we have this website and a short amount of days before we find out more about this new Metal Gear project. We'll stay tuned. (But, we have a good, obvious hunch about the title.)

THE VERDICT by McKinley Noble McKinley Noble's Avatar Is it just me, or have all the clues been way too obvious? Maybe it's not what we all think it is. Nah, it's probably exactly what we think it is. Maybe. Probably.

ughh I don't think MGS5 is gonna be a ps3 exclusive. Kojima is planning to announce MGS4 for the 360 in E3, well that's the rumor anyways...
