Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver trademarked, details revealed

Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver definitely looks like it's headed to American shelves, while more gameplay elements have been revealed via Japan's CoroCoro Magazine.

Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver hasn't yet been confirmed for an American release by Pokemon USA, but according to SiliconEra, Nintendo of America filed for trademarks on both games on May 7. Unless NOA is simply trying to protect the franchise rights, this news is just more confirmation that the Gold & Silver remakes will be hitting the whole world soon enough. (Besides, Nintendo knows that the games would likely sell a bajillion copies in the states.)

Also, a batch of new information from Bulbapedia indicates several new features from HeartGold and SoulSilver, including a new female character, redesigned maps of the Johto region (duh!) and DS Touch capabilities for the in-game menu. This info comes from the June issue of CoroCoro Magazine, one of the largest Japanese monthly manga magazines in the country. See their news post here, which also has a link to the scans themselves.

On the bottom left, the DS layout for Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver shows how to pick your starting Pokemon. The bottom right shows your selected Pokemon following you on the map. I'm so totally sold on this game, it's a little sad.

One of the smallest, but most important changes, in the gameplay is that your starter Pokemon (Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile) will follow the main character around the map. In Pokemon Yellow, players had this mechanic to gauge their Pikachu's happiness, which might be the case with your starter in HeartGold and SoulSilver. That's about all we know so far, as Pokemon USA has yet to make an official statement about the game as far as the U.S. is concerned. There is a special event built into the Japanese launch of the game, which is part of a promotion for the 12th Pokemon movie, "Arceus: To a Conquering Spacetime", so fans of the series (read: me) should hope for some special pre-release Pokemon information. We'll be waiting for Pokemon USA to make an announcement, although there is wide speculation that they might be waiting until E3 to say, well, anything.

A new female character will also be showing up in the game, a sure subject of much fanart to come (why not send yours in to GamePro's Art Attack contest?).

THE VERDICT by McKinley Noble McKinley Noble's Avatar I'm hoping that Nintendo makes an announcement about HeartGold & SoulSilver at E3, especially since my girlfriend wants a Celebi. Can't imagine why, since it has a whopping seven elemental weaknesses. She says it's cute, though, so I'd better pray that these new games will let me catch one.

Holy crap, that was quick!!! Pokemon Platinum just came out too and already we got a new game coming!!! Anyway, the game looks cool. A remake I guess of both the Gold and Silver versions of the GB Color games. I like the fact that your starter pokemon follows you when you walk now just like in the Yellow Version. I'm wondering if when you turn around and talk or press a on your pokemon, will they make an expression? Anyway, I can' wait to tell my friends about this at work!!! Go Pokemon!

I cant wait for this! Gold was my favorite game, tieing with Emerald. Anyway, i hope its a better following mechanic than in Yellow. The ability to switch your follower to anyone in your party?? I'd do anthing to have an Entei follower! BTW, McKinley, how do u get Celebi in the original Gold? I've tried every strategy ive read about on the internet. Most of them have to do with that altar in the forest....
