Portable NES system lets gamers relive 8-bit classics

If you've ever wanted to take Nintendo games on the go, Think Geek is now putting 8-bit gaming in the palms of your hands with the Retro Mini Handheld NES System.

Nintendo games are great, but their remakes lack the hard difficulty and cartridge-blowing nostalgia of their original titles, while shelling out real cash for virtual Nintendo dollars can be a hassle. Thankfully, Think Geek is selling the spiffy new Retro Mini Handheld NES System for those of us who can't let go of Mega Man 2 and the original Mike Tyson-version of Punch-Out!! You probably can't play Duck Hunt with it, but you'll look like an old-school pro with this bad boy.

Portable NES system lets gamers relive 8-bit classics

Imagine the looks you'll get playing this thing on your local city bus.

Even better, you can hook this up to home TV or other entertainment system, although the settings for 8-bit gameplay may be kind of weird. It doesn't come with any actual games, but most NES titles go for anywhere between 99 cents and $30 on Amazon, anyway. The only real downside I can see with this thing is that it takes a whopping 4 AA batteries to run, something I haven't had to find cash for since I had my first Game Boy. Think Geek also has cool alternatives in the form of the Retro Duo and the Retro NES USB Controller, for those of us running ROM software and emulators on our computers. Now where did I put that copy of Dragon Warrior III?

Important Note

The Retro Mini does not come with any games. You'll need to find your own cartridges or buy some on eBay. Also old NES cartridges will probably have cruddy contacts. Remember that the cartridges are very finicky if not cleaned properly. Make sure you clean the contacts on your cartridges or they may not work properly in the Retro Mini.

THE VERDICT by McKinley Noble McKinley Noble's Avatar I actually found a Super Nintendo and a Genesis while I was rooting through dumpsters for furniture, so this is a welcome alternative to taking those hot, painful showers in rubbing alcohol.

It looks cool man! They should have had another option for the batteries, how about one that U'll be able to charge. Still acording to gamepro the thing will run for 8 hours with those 4 batterries.

100millions of DS sold worldwide and it doesnt tkae more than 10$ to mod it so that you can play any game on emulator . why would someone pay for this ? this wont work .

It looks pretty cool, I'd consider getting one, especially because it can hook to a TV too.

They are actually making a second version of this that is a bit more streamlined and it has wireless controllers and a zapper too.

why do that even, get the emulators and roms on your PC and have your Big Screen TV as the monitor. Or emulators on a Wii.
