Forbes's site recently released a list of the world's 200 most reputable companies (via the Reputation Institute), with Nintendo coming in at number 6, beating out other huge titans of industry such as Microsoft, the Walt Disney Company, Pepsi and Apple Computers.
Nintendo may be upsetting the balance of the gaming industry with their patented "appeal to the casual crowd" technique, but it's working out well for the makers of the Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo DSi according to Forbes. A list of the world's top 200 companies was provided to Forbes today via the Reputation Institute, citing Nintendo as the #6 ranked company in the international market. In what essentially sums up as the business world's biggest popularity contest, the Reputation Institute surveys consumer groups, industry members and corporate stakeholders every year to see which companies have been generating the biggest buzz.
Nintendo executives, proving that just about anything will make money on the Nintendo Wii.
This one of several huge steps for Nintendo, who recently posted massive annual sales, citing the following numbers to the gaming press.
Nintendo Wii = 25.95 million units sold in 2008, with 50.39 million units sold life-to-date. This makes Nintendo's Wii the "fastest home video game hardware in history" to hit those numbers. Considering that home consoles used to cost more than a reasonable American sedan, that's probably true, given the Wii's low price point.
Nintendo DS = 31.18 million sold in 2008, with 101.78 million sold life-to-date. Likely counting both the original DS and the newer DS Lite models, the combined sales "exceeded 100 million units faster than any console or handheld video game hardware in history," according to Nintendo.
Overall, Nintendo made (in yens) 1.8 trillion ($18.5 billion) in net sales for 2008 , which added up to a 10 percent rise from last year. The company's annual net income was 279 billion, which is a lot more money than anyone reading this article will ever make in their entire lives.
Interestingly, Japan made the most money for Nintendo's stakeholders, since the the launch of a new system or Mario/Dragon Warrior/Zelda-related game over there is the general equivalent of a national holiday. With upcoming titles like The Conduit and Punch-Out! still in the works for 2009, not to mention the hot release of Rhythm Heaven, Nintendo doesn't look like it's going to stop printing money anytime in the near future.
Top-Selling Nintendo Games of 2008
Wii Fit = 16.37 million
Mario Kart = 15.4 million units
Brain Age/Brain Age 2 = 7.31 million
Pokemon Platinum = 3.75 million
Animal Crossing: City Folk = 3.38 million
Wii Music = 2.65 million
Kirby Superstar Ultra = 2.36 million

Yeah, I don't know about all you slackers, but I plan on making way more than 279 billion in my life. How? Simple. Coffee with booze in it.
You may scoff, but keep watching: "Star-Blasted" is coming to a town near you.
