Dead Rising 2 executive producer Dan Brady criticizes Capcom's gunplay

During Capcom's unveiling of Dead Rising 2, CEO of Blue Castle Games and DR2 executive producer Dan Brady made some harsh criticisms of the franchise's first installment and Capcom in general.

Yesterday, during a presentation of Capcom's Dead Rising 2, the sequel to the popular Xbox 360 title Dead Rising , CEO and General Manager of Blue Castle Games Dan Brady stated:

"One of the things that really sucked in Dead Rising 1 was actually the gun. I would argue it actually hasn't been implemented all that well in very many of the Capcom products at all."

A bold claim, considering how big a role guns have played in previous Capcom games such as the Resident Evil , Devil May Cry and Lost Planet franchises, all known for their run-and-gun gameplay.

"I know a lot of people that played Dead Rising 1 and they enjoyed the Katana, they enjoyed those things. But what they really wanted is they wanted a gun that wasn't going to be annoying, something they didn't want to huck at the monitor. These are the kind of changes we're actually doing this year."

That gunshot looks pretty well implemented to me.

That gunshot looks pretty well implemented to me.

Regardless of whether or not Capcom holds a reputation of excellence in gunplay, what is certain is that they hold a reputation of excellence in crazy fun bloodshed and Dead Rising 2 looks to be no exception in that category.

"We're not trying to reinvent the game, but it's something that we're doing to make it an even more fun sandbox to play in for the user."

Dead Rising 2 currently has no release date, but it should make its way to shelves before the end of Capcom's fiscal year in March, 2010. It will be available for the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

I agree with him. I think the point he's trying to make is that Capcom generally doesn't have Westernized gunplay mechanics. There seems to always be some different way going about it. If Dead Rising 2 guns handle a bit more traditionally, I think many would understand. Even Lost Planet 2 supposedly has changed its control for our audiences.

Don't think that's the point of the quote. I think he's referencing the fact that Capcom has consistently implemented shooting mechanics in their game (hello Resident Evil 5) that don't make sense when you look at the tech available to them. When you can't move while shooting a gun? Really doesn't make any sense.

Dan seemed like an uber fan of Dead Rising 1, and that's probably why he's being a little harder on the game -- like a fanboy. So I'm sure him and Blue Castle are going to make DR2 at least 14 times better.

Agreed. Thats why the demo turned me off so much. The shooting mechanics plus a super human boss that had 8 million units of health does not equal a fun gaming experience.

The gunplay in Dead Rising 1 was retarded. It was ridicules how slow the crosshair moved and how long it took you to aim it up with your target. I'm glad that's one flaw thats out of the way for the sequel, but they still got a lot of work to do.

I know ppl are gonna shoot my comment down for this, but with Left 4 dead out, I don't even see why Capcom would even bother releasing this game. Just my thoughts.

I liked the gun-play in DR1. I liked how they purposely made it feel like it wasn't a necessity so it wouldn't take away from other items but I get his point.

I agree with both of you. RE5 is not run-and-gun. It's run-and-run and then stop-and-gun. I didn't like Lost Planet gameplay either and DMC is just the same thing over and over. It was fun in the first couple of games but DMC4 is just like the others with no improvements other than better graphics. I do love Dead Rising though.

Head shots were easy in DR & very effective.
I hope they dont push this one to far into the shooter genre.
Most 3rd person shooters just feel like bad first person shooters to me.
