Steve Wiebe sets Donkey Kong Jr. World Record

King Of Kong's Steve Wiebe may not have set the Donkey Kong world record just yet, but he's off to one heck of a start.

Steve Wiebe, the unlikely protagonist of 2007's King of Kong documentary has just set a world record in Donkey Kong Jr. with a score of 1,139,800, beating out previous record holder Ike Hall by 106,800 points.

"This is a profound performance," said Walter Day, founder of Twin Galaxies which holds the high scores for arcade games world wide."On March 19, 1983, Billy Mitchell set a then-World Record of 957,300 points at the Twin Galaxies International Scoreboard in Ottumwa, Iowa. That record stood for 25 years until Ike Hall of Port Angeles, WA scored 1,033,000 points on August 10, 2008, lifting the record 86,000 points. Even though the World Record was able to creep up by only 86,000 points in those 25 years, Steve has managed the unimaginable and has lifted it another 106,000 points by scoring 1,139,500 points."

"1,139,800" Way to go Steve. It's so cool that with all the advancements in videogames there are people competeing in tournements playing these classic arcade standards. If I had the extra change I would buy a Donkey Kong Multi-Arcade Game Cabinent. Steve has to be close to the maximum score possible in Donkey Kong. Atleast with a regulation Nintendo Board.

Shut yo mouth fool. My local laundromat still has Dig Dug and Galaga. If only most places still supported retro arcade machines.

Or s/he is a mainstream gamer, which is even more of a reason to throw stones.

How can we apply this to Next-Gen consoles? We need more classic games available on X-Box 360 and PS3 so we can have online leaderboards that have more record breaking scores. I know it is an issue of licensing and Nintendo is already doing this but...I wish they had some sort of trophy/acheivement system as well. Can you imagine getting a Platinum Trophy in Super Mario or Zelda...that would be sweet.
