Analyst: PS2 price drop will help PS3

The PlayStation 2's recent price drop to $99.99 isn't a particularly exciting announcement for hardcore gamers. But if an analyst from DFC Intelligence is right, the cheap new PS2 may pave the way for the PS3 to take over later.

PS2 price cut may be right move for PS3's future

A $99.99 PS2 isn't exactly a thrilling announcement, but it might be a wise move on Sony's part.

An excerpt from the full feature is below:

While dropping the price of the PS2 might not have been in the best interest of gamers hoping for a PS3, it was the right move for Sony's bleeding balance sheet, says market researcher David Cole of DFC Intelligence.

"Obviously everyone wants a PS3 price drop, but profitability is essential for Sony to continue funding the business," Cole says. "The longer they can keep PS2 alive, the longer they have for the PS3."

"Keeping consumers playing the PS2 can stop them for migrating to a competing system," Cole says.

THE VERDICT by Sid Shuman Sid Shuman's Avatar

I'm inclined to agree with the analyst -- a cheap PS2 is good for everyone. But until Sony can carve that PS3 down to $300 or lower, it will remain a tougher sell in this bad economy (despite it being an excellent game console in its own right). What do you guys think?

Who knows, maybe it might help. Although, it's recommended PS3 focuses on updating and adding new and improved features, not on reducing cost of parts. The Xbox 360 for example has a great experience and features offline and online and that's why it doesn't really need to reduce it's price

I've been saying this since the PS3 first came out, it was worth the price then and is now. You get what you pay for with these consoles. The PS3 is pricey because you get raw power, reliability, a versatile machine, and the best lineup of games out there: MGS4, LBP, GT5, Killzone2, Resistance 1 & 2, and so on. The Wii is $250 because it lacks power and versatility, and the games are trash aside from a few Nintendo 1st party games and the odd 3rd party game. The 360 has a great lineup of games, great online, and is a powerful machine, but I don't want to buy a machine that I could potentially be replacing 2 or more times.

Hmm so people who get a ps2 this late will get a ps3.......hmmmm....i call bullspit. Why BECAUSE PEOPLE GET WHATS FUN NOT SOLELY BY NAME SAKE!!! Man all those people who brought the Wii were not gamecube owners i'll bet you that. The were/are Ps2 owners, xbox owners, classic nintendo owners. I dont want to start a monkey shit fight but the people who looks to upgrade will instantly see Sony's compitition selling the same game for less of the console price. Bluray didnt take off. Dont believe me? Walmart and costco constantly sell bluray cheaper than its dvd counterpars during sales. In blockbuster blurays wall is scaled back and they buy less bluray. There is no reason a brandnew release only has 4 copies put out.........Keep these excuses Sony lovers, thats the voice of insanity speaking.....doing the same thing expecting a different result will only help the compitition. And guess what? They dont need any help.

The PS3 is so expensive because of the blu ray. If it used DVDs then it would have been a lot cheaper, and wouldn't have so many mandatory game installs.

Id rather have a new PS2 than a crappy $ 170 hand-held. Also, the PS3 needs a big price drop, say 150-200 off, with $ 20 greatest hits games.

The_Iceman

wouldnt simply increasing the blu-ray drive speed decrease the PS3 load times or is it a lack of on-board ram?? I wonder why hasnt sony already done this

The_Iceman

the PS2 was 330 at debut right? would be a great time for those who never owned one at just 1/3 the price w/ a huge library of inexpensive games
