Sony emphatically denies PS3 price drop

In its strongest wording to date, Sony Computer Entertainment America emphatically denied that a PlayStation 3 price drop is planned. The terse media statement comes on the heels of repeated rumors that PS3 price drop was imminent.
READ: $99 PlayStation 2 announcement coming?
The brief quote, part of a wide release to news media, once again emphatically denies that a PS3 price drop is planned. Al De Leon, PR manager for SCEA, says that Sony "remains focused on the long-term momentum of the PS3."
For some time, the game industry rumor mill has been relentlessly fixated on a PlayStation 3 price drop. Media sources suggest that the worldwide branch of Sony Computer Entertainment is planning an announcement for tomorrow, Tuesday, March 31st. But tomorrow's announcement is likely a confirmation of a PlayStation 2 price cut to $99, a story that has picked up momentum in recent days. Considering the tanking international economy, a $99 PlayStation 2 could theoretically keep the aging system alive indefinitely -- it still racks up sturdy sales nearly 10 years after its debut, thanks in part to its massive game library. And its technical specifications are largely similar to the mega-hit Wii system, proving that HD graphics aren't necessary for high sales.
Regarding the PS3 price drop rumors, we've posted the full SCEA news release below.
"As we have stated previously, we do not have plans for a PS3 price drop, and any rumors to that effect are false and are the result of speculation. SCEA remains focused on the long-term momentum of PS3. With the industry's best software lineup this year, combined with our most aggressive marketing campaign to date, we remain confident in our approach and the value we're delivering with PS3." Al De Leon, PR Manager, Sony Computer Entertainment America
Based on my gut instincts, I think the big announcement for tomorrow is the $99 PS2. It's actually a great deal -- the new PS2s are teeny-tiny and have integrated power supplies, so no more power brick! If I didn't already have the older 60GB PS3 (the one that plays PS2 games perfectly), I'd definitely pick up one of these. Anyone else?

I have the older 80 gig, how is that on backwards compatibility? I guess I'll pop in a couple PS2 games I have and check.

Hmm... sorry I just don't care if the PS2 is gonna be 99 bucks. There's still a bunch of current gen games that I haven't played.

I may get one of the $99 PS2s simply to have a replacement ready for when my original model system dies. It's a shame it can't utilize my PS2's HDD though.

I know dropping the price would hurt Sony in the short-term, but think about the long-term Sony! You need a bigger install base!

Sony probably won't and shouldn't have to drop the price of the PS3 just because people keep bitching and complaining that it's too expensive. They're still losing money on the thing, why would they drop the price and lose even more money!? I agree that it's an expensive machine, but that's the price you pay for power and reliability. I think Sony had good intentions with the PS3 making it as powerful and versatile a machine as they could, unfortunately I think they got a little too ambitious with it and costs got out of control.
I have one of the original 60GB and paid through the nose for it, but I've been extremely happy with it and feel that it was worth every cent!!
