Wii MotionPlus delayed, Wii Sports Resort having trouble

There's been a lot of speculation among game journalists as to why Nintendo's much-hyped new license to print money, Wii Sports Resort, was missing from the Q2 release schedule for Wii and DS titles that Nintendo released just a few weeks ago.

The guys at the IGN Voice Chat podcast usually have the inside scoop when it comes to what Nintendo is doing (correctly predicting the Nintendo DSi release date among other things) and the latest episode has some really interesting dirt regarding the Wii Sports Resort delay.

At the 37-minute mark in episode 39 of the podcast, somebody who I believe is IGN's Matt Cassamassina claims that the same source that passed him the DSi leak has stated that Nintendo is struggling to work out some development problems with the MotionPlus peripheral. He goes on to claim that Wii Sports Resort's promised ten games may be trimmed down to eight when the product finally ships, due to the issues. Cassamassina's theory is that the problem may be calibration-- apparently you need to recalibrate a Wii MotionPlus controller every time you swap games with it, by tilting the Remote downwards.

If true, then Nintendo's problem is pretty serious-- the audience for Wii Sports is primarily interested in simplicity and would seem prone to forgetting to recalibrate between rounds of different games. The question is -- if this rumor is true -- whether Nintendo will work on making recalibration simpler, or trying to eliminate the need for it entirely.

i was hoping Punch out Wii would use motion plus....lets get this problem fixed and fast Nintendo

That isn't just a problem for casual players; I'd be pissed too if I had to recalibrate a controller every time I played a game. But I'm not going to be an early adopter of this tech, so I don't really matter. I'll be waiting for the inevitable MotionPlus out-of-the-package Wii Remote.

I though Wii Motion Plus was a bad idea from the beginning... it's not like it's a peripheral that lets you do something different, it's an add-on to make the Wii remote do exactly what it allready does, except better. It should have been included in the Wiimote from day one, or it should be free like those Wiimote condoms and new straps.
