Trade-in programs begin at Amazon, Best Buy, Toys R Us

With the economy faltering, top retailers are getting into the business of selling used games, giving consumers more options for trading in video games.

Trade-in used games at Amazon, Best Buy, and Toys R Us

This week a flurry of video game retailers including Toys R Us, Best Buy, and Amazon announced the launch of a buy-back program for the sale of used video games. Consumers can exchange used video games for store credit as long as the game meets the trade-in conditions (i.e. must not be damaged with original packaging and manual).

GameDaily BIZ reports that although online retailers such as Amazon will ultimately have a greater selection of used games, consumers still have to wait several days for the mail-in verification, leaving established competitors such as Gamestop the advantage of supplying gamers with immediate gratification.

we might finally see some very competitive buy back rates now. good. we want more for our mint condition my little pony games!

rates for returned games have always sucked. I pay $60 for a game, and a month later I can only sell it back for $8? Hopefully this does add some competition.

Yes, about time. I hated Gamestop. At blockbuster, a used copy of Super Mario Galaxy is $20, while at GS, it's $44. F**k yeah competition

Good point. Healthy competition is always a good thing and Gamestop really needs to adjust many of their ridiculous prices. Instead of them selling used games for only $5 less than a new one, they should be selling used copies for $10-20 less.

This is great news for gamers in general! I'm getting tired of getting ripped off at GameStop and I have been shopping there for 10 years. I'm itching to call it quits with GameStop sooner than later since they are just greedy!

This must be a reaction to the bad economy. I like the idea of buying used games from Amazon because they're very trustworthy, but the mailing of games and the wait kills it.
