Speaking with Gamasutra, analyst Nick Williams discussed the potential hardware sales Sony could expect when God of War III is released. Williams also asserted that in order for Sony to make the most of the hopeful killer app that the PS3's price will have to drop this year to stay competitive with Microsoft and Nintendo.

The launch of God of War III in late 2009/early 2010 will mark a pivotal moment for Sony. But in order to ensure that this game is a hardware sales driver, the cost of the base-level PS3 will need to be in the same ballpark as the Xbox 360 and Wii.

What say you? Will the release of God of War III be enough to incent consumers to purchase the (currently) heftily-priced PS3?

THE VERDICT by Andy Burt Andy Burt's Avatar If you take a look at the hard sales numbers from 2007 after God of War II was released, and how it significantly increased Sony's overall sales, this one is a no-brainer. Given that currently God of War III is one of the most anticipated PS3 games, if not the most, then we should see solid sales figures when it releases, and a price drop very, very soon.

Well I doubt anyone out there is dumb enough to buy a PS3 game without....ya know....having a PS3.....

just kidding. But yeah, this game should sell well. I know I'm buying it!

hmmm, I think that alot of people bought PS3 in anticipation for this game, but i dont want to sound like i know this for sure, but a 1/3? really? I bought a PS3, 4 it crapped out on me =( but my friend is giving me his so its all good now, for MGS4 and GOW3, most of the people i know did and i am not personally aware of anyone waiting for this among my friends to buy a PS3.
It just seems like analysts have been wrong at about every hardware increase in sales due to a game. GTA 4 sold well, but a ps3 increase was predicted= no, MGS4 = it was predicted to be a huge increase in hardware sales, small increase, Im not even sure if they got halo right.
I know this game is gonna sell alot and i mean alot, but to say that over 30% of people who want this game dont have a ps3 is wrong in my opinion.
I think this is different from god ofwar 2 because thats when, in my opinion, the franchise became huge, thats actually the 1st time i had heard of the franchise after the 2nd one. I guess we'll wait and see

hey face it, this aint hyped up killzone 2. This is God of friggin war 3. I dont care if the visuals dont match the hype their track record proves that the story will be a beast. I hope it's good. I know it will be but I just got burned on killzone so i dunno. i once brought mortal kobact3 for the ps1 even though at the time i had a saturn. I saw the demo @ kb toys(remeber them) and was blown away at a true arcade game to the last sprite(even though it had some long atrocious load times) staring me in the face. When I saw that and battle arena toshiden, i had to have the playstation(i hated the name at first). God of War 3 should sell as well as Halo 3(dont crucify me fan boys) because remember its about 20 million ps3's out there. surely it isnt because of ff13 anticipation. I say it will sell 2 million in 4 days or less.
