$100 PS3 price drop coming by June "at the latest" says analyst

An analyst confidently predicts that the PlayStation 3's price will drop $100 as early as this April.

A massive drop in the PlayStation 3 video game console's price tag, which will lower the cost of Sony's next-generation game platform $100, is expected as early as this April according to respected analyst Mike Hickey of Janco Partners.

Hickey says that cutting the PS3's price down will trigger a significant boost in hardware sales for Sony. If a price drop does happen, that'll knock to price of the 80GB PlayStation 3 down from $399.99 to $299.99 and the higher-end 160GB model down from $499.99 to $399.99.

If Sony does not cut the price of their console, we expect the continuation of languishing PS3 hardware sales and the potential for publishers to accelerate their reallocation of resources away from the PS3 console. We believe the market is expecting a PS3 price cut in April or by June at the latest.

THE VERDICT by Patrick Shaw Patrick Shaw's Avatar Sony's really going to have a killer year if they make this happen, and they probably will even if they don't drop the PS3's price with huge new PS3 games out this year like Killzone 2 and God of War III.

If they're smart, they'll do it at the end of March. Get people ready with Killzone 2, get some extra sales right after it comes out at the current price point, then drop it around the time people get their tax refunds to get more sales that way.

I hope they do a price drop, cuz my ps3 died last week =/ and i really dont want to pay for a new one at its current price since i really havent played it alot since MGS4. I would buy a new one regardless when god of war 3 comes out, which sony said will come out before the FISCAL year is over which is in march of next year so it will probaly come out in march like all the other ones. Honestly Im not sure if a price drop will necessarily help a large amount to the sales of the system. If this was last year then maybe, but now its about games and i think if people didnt buy the PS3 for MGS in huge amounts i dont think that KZ2 can do it, maybe God of War can but only time will tell, what happened to sony? =(. Another question can Sony afford to drop the price? if they do and thiere sales dont do great then their in Sega territory.
