Nothing "planned" for March, company says.
No price drop yet
Many rumors and speculations have been surfacing over the past few weeks about a price drop for the 80G PS3. Video game analyst Michael Pahcter stated that the PS3 would drop from $399 to $299, and even speculated that the Xbox 360 would follow suit short after. The most recent of rumor began when an online magazine reported that a Sony rep said the company would have a price cut on the PS3 to round out the Sony fiscal year.
With so many rumors, Sony was had no choice but to respond about the PS3 price drop. A statement issued by Sony to Edge stated, "There are no plans for a price reduction on PS3 in March 09, and anything reported on or discussed otherwise is purely rumor or speculation."
Only time will tell when the next price drop will be, but Sony has guaranteed it will not be in March of 2009.

only a fool will believe this! This is the EXACT same words they used before their first price drop. "We have no plans to drop the price"!!! Then it was the EXACT same words they used for their second price drop, "We have no plans to drop the price"!!! (but in record time for a new console do to low sales, and very close to each other). BOTH TIMES they dropped the price at the rumored time that they where suppose to happen!!! Planned? Oh and by the way Microsoft did the same thing for both their price cuts also.

In all honesty, I'm glad I paid what I did for my launch PS3. The console never ceases to amaze me, and I actually use most of the features (streaming audio and video from my PC via gigabit ethernet without the need to change any settings is especially cool). Don't get me wrong, it's still a big chunk of change, but Sony has definitely convinced me that I didn't waste my money.

If you are a person that can't wait, here is a alternative. Most companies have a 7 or 14 day price match/refund. Usually it is not as long for video games, and machines as the rest of the store. But if you can wait until 15 days of the price drop. Then you will get a refund for the price difference. But you will be taking a risk on what day it actually comes. Amazon and others are selling machines for $50 off! They ALWAYS do this before a price drop because they are warned, and dump them (it's called clearing stock) knowing that in a month, it will be 100$ cheaper, so they sell it $50 cheaper to pass the lose on to the sucker that thinks they are getting a great deal. Now if you make $200,000 a year you should not worry about this. But if you only make $25,000-50,000 a year WAIT!

I agree with you, I bought a launch 60gb and I've been very pleased with it these last two years. Yeah that was a lot of money I paid for it, but if you want power, reliability, and tonnes of great features, unfortunately that often comes with a hefty price tag.

I love how u guys say you got your money's worth and didn't mind the price tag but never mention anything about buying it for the games.

Sony will drop the price. They have no choice. It will make the console even less profitable but a price drop will close the gap.
$400 and $500 consoles even during the best economic times do not sell that well compared to the competition. If Sony thinks its going to catch up to the Xbox360 anytime soon at those price points, then they need to lay down the pipe but quick

Hmmm...Do i smell a fanboy? or is it an xbot? How come when anybody says what cool features they use on their ps3's...Wiseguy's like you automatically assume they don't use it for games..obviously they would play games because the name "playstation" is one of the most famous household brands in the WORLD.

In an odd way that might piss people off (in the short term), I think Sony might wait until May or June for a price drop. If they hold off right now, there's a possibility (slight, but still there) that people will use some of their tax refunds to go out and get a PS3 at its current price. Yes the economy doesn't make that a high probability, but it's still a possibility. That way Sony gets some extra cash while they can, and then face some small backlash (which they can handle) when they drop the price when it's really needed.
