OMG Nintendo wonders about the once obscure music generating software for Nintendo DS, which will be available at the world's largest gaming retailer next month.
Not really a game, but a nifty little music sequencer for DS owners
The Korg DS-10 Synthesizer is one of those things for the DS that has attracted a lot of attention since it was first announced. At first, import fans with a taste for music synthesizing were eagerly awaiting the chance to get their hands on it. Then AQi announce that they would be releasing it internationally, with XSEED picking up the distribution rights in America, leading to a larger number of music synthesizing fans being able to get their hands on it.
They still had to special order it through online stores but even with those restrictions the DS-10 has still managed to sell an estimated 110,000 copies in the US. Now it looks like GameStop wants to get in on some of the synthesizing action by offering it for sale in their stores starting February 9th. What is interesting about this is that they'll also be selling it for $30, which is half-price compared to what those who bought it online were paying for it, so now it will be incredibly easy for those who may have only a passing curiosity about the art of chip tune music making or just a general curiosity about the latest "new thing" that can be done with a DS to get copies.
This also raises the question if doing it at this point, so long after its initial release when those who may have been the most interested in it have gotten their copies, will mean an even larger increase in sales or just a few more curious onlookers picking it up for a few days and then either returning it for a trade-in or letting it gather dust.
I'll admit, for $30 and being able to just walk into my local mall to pick it up might make me curious enough to see what it's like to try it out for myself. Anyone else feel that way? Is the audience for such title too niche for the mainstream?

I guess this is cool for those poor unfortunate souls that can't afford their own Korg synth. This thing would be way cooler if it were a Moog IMO.

That's a helluva price cut, but it's a cut that definitely makes me want to go out and get it. I've been sitting on the fence a while but I've heard pretty good things about the DS version. Maybe it's time to pick it up finally.
