Blizzard: Tons of opportunities for players in StarCraft 2 beta test

There's still a chance, don't worry!

By Scott Pytlik

I had a chance to speak with RTS Community Manger Kevin Yu (Karune) recently and he assured me that there will be plenty of chances for players who weren't at BlizzCon '08 to get involved in the upcoming beta test.

When will this beta test be exactly? Well in a recent post I alluded to March being the month we've all been waiting for. However, some on the interwebs have tried to debunk the Captcha rumor as being a fake photoshopped image and aren't sure if March is the month or not. While it may be fake, there was never any doubt that it was exactly that, a rumor. So the answer is, no one knows and Blizzard isn't leaking anything...yet.

"The number of these (beta) keys has not been determined yet...there will be a Beta opt in process, similar to what we have done in the past for Blizzard titles," said Yu.

"There will be several activities for beta participants to get involved in, mostly competitive in nature.

"Furthermore, there will be more opportunities arising too in the form of contests for players to win beta access to StarCraft II as well, including the Vespene Laughs StarCraft II Comic Contest."

Yu later went on the Battle.net boards to announce to the rest of the public about the beta keys and the contests to win them. Here's what he said:

StarCraft II Beta Keys are up for grabs to the funniest, wittiest, able to cause a fun chuckle in your fellow StarCraft fans!

As a FYI, we will be adding (2) StarCraft II Beta Keys to the Vespene Laughs 1st place winner's prize package each month for the StarCraft II Comic Contest. The rules will be updated accordingly for the February round of entries. Additionally, we will also reward previous 1st place winners of the contest as well with the beta keys as well.

This contest will be the first of various contests that will begin offering a chance to get into the StarCraft II Beta. If you know there isn't a funny bone anywhere in ya, don't worry, there will be plenty of other opportunities, just keep checking back with us.

Please note that there is no official announcement of a StarCraft II Beta start date. Beta keys to winners will be distributed during the StarCraft II Beta process.

Yu also mentioned that sites that cover StarCraft II will have an opportunity to snag some beta keys, so be on the lookout for that as we get more news about the beta in weeks to come.

In a completely unrelated topic, Yu did touch on the new Battle.net and how it will continue to improve after its initial launch.

"Battle.net will evolve much like it has in WC3, with features added over time in addition to the ones youll get out of the box."

Wonder if any of these contests will bring down the internet like the LittleBigPlanet contests since StarCraft has an even bigger following.

true cuz sc2 does have a much bigger fanbase than lbplanet. Batten down the hatches gamepro cuz if you get some beta keys there will most likely be a server crash!

haha, bring down the internet. They won't bring down the whole internet, but imagine all of the screaming when they bring down Blizz's servers and WoW crashes.

Well, I'd like some beta keys! I got to beta test the frozen throne expansion a while back, been itching to get into the SC2 one!
